Wanted - A 820mm tall standard seat. Anybody in the UK got one they don't need?

Have finally realised, following reading on this forum last night, that my lightly used 1250RS came with a Sports seat (840mm) and not the OEM tall seat (820mm) that I thought that I had.

I could do with an 820mm to try out. Anybody in the UK got one going spare? I am sure I have read a post with someone saying they had one in the loft if anybody wanted one. Cannot now find that post. Hence this one!!

My F800GT with comfort seat has a ride height of 820mm and that suits me perfectly. Hence an expectation of an 820mm seat height when I bought the RS. I thought the ride height on the RS was a bit high but I am a tad bow legged and put the difference down to extra frame width of the RS and maybe a need to fiddle with suspension settings. (My Stelvio was also supposedly 820mm but was really too tall to be safe for me). I am on the balls of my feet when stationary and the RS carries it weight down low so I was not struggling unduly.

However, despite fitting bar risers, I am getting some neck strain on outings and the side stand is a stretch (I have a 29" inseam but wear Daytona M Star Boots with platform soles). I checked out the relative ergonomics of both my BMs via cycle-ergo.com late last night and realised that, despite my mods, I have a 14 degree forward lean on the RS compared to 8 degrees on the F800 (which has 45mm bar risers). And, after further reading of posts, the penny finally dropped!

I have not ridden it much because of work and my farkling over the last two weeks. I really like the legroom with the 840mm seat but my inflexible short neck is going to limit the comfort of my journeys. So it has got to be sensible to try an 820 mm seat.

I have priced a new one from Bohling and had a look on Ebay and put out a feeler to check seat height on one offered there.

If you end up buying used from eBay or whatever, just be aware that there's quite a lot of confusion out there about which seat is which. This is because all the seat variants have the same base, all of which have the identical BMW part number embossed into it. The actual part number of the different seats is printed on a paper label which is stuck on the base using special adhesive designed to fall off after a few weeks.

I know this because (a) I struggled to find a 820mm seat for my own RS a while ago, and (b) because I flogged the original 790mm seat on eBay and ended up with a very irate buyer demanding a refund, claiming that I'd sent him the wrong seat; ie it was identical to the one he already had (he did back down after I 'educated' him!)

I’m currently riding on the highest Sport seat. So somewhere an original 2015 “Standard” seat is hiding in my garage gathering dust (just kidding - it’ll be in a box somewhere - good as new).

I’ll go find it in the near future and let you know if it’s still in one piece.

Actually it was that thread started by you along with another more recent one ("OEM seat. Which is which?") that triggered my realisation. It was only when I saw photos of all four seats in a thread that I realised that I had the 840mm not the 820mm. You can see all seats (and also some that will not fit) on the Motorrad- Bohling website (I still cannot post direct links so those interested will have to do that search for themselves!). A second search may be necessary to catch the low seat (NB: I have no connection with them but their illustrations do help define the different profiles):

As I now know seats from newer R1200R, R1200RS, R1250R and R1250RS are interchangeable (I think the cut off for the 1200 is 2014>)

Seats options are:

840mm - 77348 555 886
820mm - 52538 534 318
790mm - 52538 534 316
760mm - 52538 534 317

As you rightly say the seat number embossed in the plastic base to the saddle is common to all suitable seats. It is the infinitely losable glued on paper ticket that has the number which tells one seat from another. If that goes you need to be able to recognise the profile. (I note that several saddles currently on Ebay have the ticket missing).

Hope that helps someone! With a reasonable number of these bikes likely now available 2nd hand it is information that will be useful to a prospective purchaser. I would sincerely hope that those buying direct from BMW agents should not need our assistance but my reading of posts on this site suggests otherwise!

I was looking for an 820mm seat recently but nobody was able to help. I have the 760mm seat and am getting it built up by Ross from CMSEATS.CO.UK next week so I’ll update on results when done.
