How far should the front wheel shaft be in relation to the front fork? Will you post a photo of your shaft / fork?|addpics|tua-3-8512.jpg|/addpics|

Looks just like mine. That depth is set when you tighten the "nut" on the left side.

Yes, but I can force the fork leg out. I it not "the one and only " position.

It looks a little too far in, hard to tell.
Is the spacer facing the correct way?

Yes, the spacer is mounted correct.

Don't forget to switch on the ignition if ESA equipped and 'bounce' the forks to make sure they are seated and parralel before everything gets tightened.
They're locked solid on esa bikes with ignition off. Great if you have the mainstand and don't over balance forward (don't ask!!)

Remove front wheel stand and firmly compress front forks. Do not actuate handbrake lever at the same time. Page 128 owners manual

The stand fitting starts page 115 and jumps to page 126 for wheel removal - no idea why they aren't in one place, pages in order.

Don't know about any actual advice but I spend a few minutes rotating the bearings by hand and forcing in some of the grey bmw grease, stops any chance of water getting in.

To make sure I understand, you have tightened the axle and also tightened the pinch bolts and now you can move one or both forks in or out.

Anyone else worried ?

Handbook text as follows :-
Front wheel installation opposite the running direction Accident hazard Observe running direction arrows on tire or rim. Roll front wheel into front suspension.
Lift front wheel and install quick-release axle 1. Remove front wheel stand and firmly compress front forks. Do not actuate handbrake lever at the same time.
Mount front wheel stand ( 114).
Install screw 1 with specified torque. Brace quick-release axle on the right side at the same time. Quick-release axle in telescopic fork
37 lb/ft (50 Nm) Tighten axle clamping screws 2 to appropriate torque.
Clamping screw for quick-release axle in telescopic fork Tightening sequence: Tighten the screws 6 times, alternating between one and the other each time 14 lb/ft (19 Nm)

My understanding, as I use the mainstand and a bottle jack under the engine with a piece of wood against the engine, is to reinsert and hand tighten the wheel spindle, lower the bike, then 'compress' the forks, which gets them in line as they move. Then re-raise bike front and follow the tightening procedures, than lower the bike, slow test ride and re-check.

The forks can move if the bolts are loose.

Half the time I forget this step because it's not mentioned in the shop manual, plus I have not had forks since 2002.
Most of the time I use printed copies from the BMW DVD instead of the Riders Manual.
On our K75 bikes when I was done I'd spin the front wheel.
If the forks did not settle in exactly parallel to each other one of the brakes would drag a little and I would need to repeat the bounce.

We call it an axle here in the USA
