I've got a mixed weekend of track + Wisconsin (USA) rally and need to trailer the RS. My concerns come from me being used to *other* bike's front/rear suspension compressing while I crank down ratchet straps. With ESA, my suspension only compresses while the bike is one, so ...

When my bike was collected recently (long story but suffice to say it runs better on petrol than diesel) by a specialist bike transport company, they ratcheted the front down hard (overcame the resistance) and secured the rear wheel. Solid as a rock. Have done 1000 miles since and all seems ok and not a mark on it. |

Thank you! That was my concern. I'll go ahead and compress the suspension regardless of it's ESA "stiffness".

Pictures from my first trailering experience with the RS on a Uhaul trailer. Keep in mind, I was limited to the tie-down spots on the trailer. A 45-deg strap angle is always preferred.

It looks like without the Baxley the bike is too far forward to use those floor hooks, so I would suggest using the outermost hooks on the front of the trailer. I use two straps on the back and don't tension the rear of the bike toward the back of the trailer. Rear tension pulls against the front which is not what you want. I go straight to the sides, as is shown in the pic from the owner's manual. Rear straps are mostly to prevent side to side of the rear of the bike, so not much tension at all on these. A ratchet may be overkill...too much side tension is not good for the rear footpegs. To the OP, note that the kickstand and the centerstand are up, and there is not too much tension on the front, maybe 30% of fork travel. Don't ratchet those straps all the way down! |

Just returned from my first trip to Colorado. Due to the compressed nature of the allotted time off of work, I decided to trailer the RS 1700 miles to Gunnison. So there was no permanent damage to the trailer floor, I made a plywood platform to secure the chocks for both bikes. The 6' x 12' UHaul enclosed trailer had tie down rings down each side that were used with my Baxley Sport Chock to great effect. Once in the chock, I used soft ties and ratchet straps to the pannier frames to stabilize side movement. Rock solid for all 3400 miles of transport. Ignore the straps in the pic. That was one of our initial attempts at figuring out the right combination.

I'd not be happy about tying down on the handlebars for fear of the yoke clamps that hold the handlebars in place, giving way, allowing the bars to rotate downwards, thus loosening the two front ties.
