My bike is way for the winter but I am looking forward to riding again next spring.

I found the stock seat seemed to hurt my tailbone area on rides longer than 30min and am contemplating a sergeant set..opinions? Best place to buy one?

I had one on my last bike (S1000R) and it was super comfortable. I bought it from the UK Sargent website. I did think about one for the RS but personally I find the stock seat really comfortable. My experience of the Sargent is that you sit “in” rather than “on” which means you don’t slide around at all.

How tall are you and which BMW seat do you currently have? IMHO, the Sargent tall seat is a modest improvement over the Standard RS (i.e., Tall R) seat. Have you checked ebay for current "pre-owned" options? That's the simple way to save money.

I agree with Mr. 36654. I also have the standard Sargent seat on my RS and feel it is only slightly better than the stock RS seat. However, be aware that the standard Sargent seat is a little lower than the original seat, so if you are 5'-10" or taller, you might want to order their taller seat, which will provide you a little more legroom between the seat and the pegs.

If it's your tailbone, you might try the feel of the flatter platform of the "tall" BMW saddle. There's a lot less forward slide and it allows more hip flexion to avoid sitting on your sacrum (which will eventually enrich your chiropractor or physical therapist).

I am 5’10, around 220lb.

My seat is the stock (tall) seat. I saw the 10% off offer with sergeant at the moment but likely will hold off to see if they offer 20% or keep searching for a used seat. I have never been lucky finding a used seat however (searched for years for a seat on my K1300S)

Hi Plum,

I believe Sargent seats are all designed to be concave rather than convex, their design result is that they spread the pressure to your "sit bones" & cheeks, rather than your tailbone and tender parts. The Sargent seats I have had varied in width and styling to fit the bike (R1150R is medium, R1200RT is wide, R1200RS is narrow)

Early on, I tried to have my wife ride pillion on my R1150R with the stock seats. After about 30 miles she was complaining loudly and by the time we got back home she refused to ever get on it again. I also got quite a bit of heat and chaffing from the stock seat, and decided to replace it with a Sargent. I ordered it directly from them because of their 30 day return policy and their extended warranty when you buy directly from them. I got the wife to give the new seat a go, and she was all smiles even after a 300 mile day.

With regard to the RS, I purchased my bike with the BMW sport seat option (high / narrow). While it gave some better leg room and was much better than the standard seat, it was still causing heat / chaffing and giving my sciatica a work out. As much as I would try, I couldn't bear to ride more than 250 miles in a day, which was way too limiting for a tourer.
I bought the Sargent high seat set with heat. The design is even better than the previous ones as the new one has a hollowed channel down the center (not visible). I put it on the bike and took it for a 530 mile "lunch ride", all smiles, and ready to go again the next day.

I would not get the heat option again, even on the lowest setting, it's way too hot (maybe I can add a resistor or something to tone it down)

I bought it with the flat top stitch, grippy side panels and they honored my request to use blue thread which gives it a subtle style cue. I am very happy with it. The options on their website are a bit confusing, this is what my invoice said

Hi Plum,

I bought a new RS in July. Regular seat, i am 5' 7" /160. I purchased the custom Sargeant soon after. I did a couple 6+ hour days on it. My verdict is I think it will put more pressure on your tailbone because it is flatter in back. Honestly felt like I was sitting on a toilet. I much prefer the stock seat over it. What would be ideal is a combination of the firmness of the Sergeant with the contour of the stock.

I went to the Sergeant store in JAX and asked if they could re- customize the custom seat. They were not able to do so.

It will be interesting to get your thoughts on this gel pad insert after the seat has been sitting in the 100 degree plus hot sun in your area especially come summer. I've read and heard other say who have used the gel pads on top of their stock seat they are very hot as the gel material holds the heat and it never really cools. Comfortable they say but hot to sit on.
