Oil smoke on cold start after bike has been sitting for over a week

The temperatures and my work schedule have kept me off my bike for a couple of weeks. Today I started up the bike and noticed some smoke from the exhaust. I walked behind the bike to take a sniff and it smells like burning oil. It’s been a while since I have had a boxer motor is it normal for some oil to burn after the bike has been sitting for a long time? |

Nothing new for BMW boxer, or old K-bike (for that matter), engines. Smoke upon start up is very traditional for those BMW engines when the bike has been resting on its side stand for a while. Just one more unique BMW "feature".

The amount of oil would be very slight - it would only be whatever was in the bore / around the rings on shut down. The oil in the sump is way below the cylinder and any oil on the underside of the piston would likely stay there. I doubt if the amount of oil would be measurable.

On the old boxers word was that if you shut the engine off and wait 3-5 seconds before setting it on the side stand then it will not smoke. I still do this out of habit...not sure if it's still valid. Also, check your oil level. If it's too high it may cause this anomaly. Either way the smoke is not a problem . |
