Navigation » Keep an eye on your Nav VI (or V) battery cover....

I naturally chose the wettest day (Sunday) of the bank holiday weekend for stage 1 of my journey to south west France (Cardiff - Rouen via tunnel). By the time I reached the M20 the Nav VI screen was flashing on and off and I noticed with horror that there appeared to be water inside the screen on the left hand side and along the bottom. By the time I was in France I had no screen at all but was still receiving occasional voice instructions, and with only a few odd diversions finally made it to my hotel stop.

After a large beer and dinner I had a look at the Nav. As I lifted it up water ran out of a gap between the top of the battery cover (the end without the screws) and the case - where of course there shouldn't be a gap

By now the water has spread across the entire screen, the battery plug was "tight" and on trying to disconnect it the whole thing came away from some very green looking corroded wires on the board beneath....yes, it was well and truly fucked.

I'm pretty sure that I put the cover back on properly when I put the SD card in a year or so ago. I can only think that when the Nav fell onto a carpeted floor some time ago it might have "popped" the cover, but who knows?

So (very expensive) lesson learned - check that the cover is seated properly before setting off

The bits are in a refuse facility in the Sud Ouest....I couldn't be arsed to bring it back. Motorrad in Perigueux wanted €842 for a new one. My friendly dealer at home sorted me for a "bargain" £595...

Hmm that's interesting, because there was definitely a gap where the water ran out - I know that the Nav won't actually work without the cover on, there's a little magnetic or whatever thingy in the cover so it senses when it's on. I guess it's possible for it to be "not quite" on but still work.

This might be irrelevant but on my Zumo 660, there is a little blue gasket that seals the battery cover. I have found it possible to catch this in the cover if it gets slightly dislodged when re-fitting. I don't know if the Nav V, VI etc. have this as well.

No worries. We hardly have to open the cover with the NAV V or VI as the usb connection has it's own little rubber seal. Only if we need to access the mSD card or the battery, we need to remove the cover using the supplied screw driver.

My NAV6 got funky, not with water, but with dust. Was riding through a section of road in Nevada with fine, blowing dust. When I got out of the area, the map was not displaying right. A few taps with the wonderwheel brought it back to normal. At the next break, I took it out of the cradle and while I didn't see any obvious dust on the contacts or the vulnerable areas of the unit, I have yet to dissect the beast to see if any got inside.
