Those of you who have sat navs do you when travelling in various European countries switch off the speed camera alerts, remove the speed camera files or do neither, I leave in one week and don't want to fall foul of various rules and regulations.

I do nothing.

In France using a device to warn of speed cameras is illegal. Garmin accommodate this by flashing up "dangerous zone" on the display when in France.

Keep your eyes peeled. There are multiple threads on the very busy GS forum about speeding tickets being sent to UK riders. Austria, Netherlands, Germany & Luxembourg seem to be the keenest. NL fines are eye watering.

So the Navigator VI won#t warn me of camera sites in France?

Strange cos the TomTom nav that is std fitment in the car did earlier this year on holiday and as I am heading to The Bol D'or in a couple of weeks I was kinda hoping it would.

Best dig out my old German number plate that is screwed to the garage wall then

I thought the law in France was that it was illegal to have a device that tells you of their exact location, but OK to have a device that warns you that there is a speed camera on a particular stretch of road?

I could be wrong, and often am. Just ask my wife...

Back from a 5500km trip France Spain Switzerland Luxembourg.
For changes in law: If you update your maps on your device it will change those settings.
Not exact locations but zones where the camera is.
Also the speed limit of 90kmh outside of village/city has dropped to 80kmh.

It does warn you but does not use the exact words - you get the same red bar on the screen but there is no camera logo - you have the words "danger zone" or similar. I thought I made that clear

Fully agree, Garmin (and TomTom) only warn of stretches of road where camera's are located. In daylight you can spot them pretty easy, but they can be on the side of the road but also in the center barriers! Only place where any speed camera info is forbidden is Switzerland, so these are not included at all by Garmin and TT. Rest of Europe you can leave in your device as is, nothing illegal there.

so most people here now drive as zombies, so afraid to go too fast, even when overtaking on the motorway...

No, this is the reverse of Brexit. Part & parcel of an agreement in the EU for cross border enforcement. Brexit has not happened yet.

Speeding tickets in the mail is the norm across many EU countries. Most penalties arise from fixed cameras or mobile cameras in vans. There are very few manned speed traps in many countries due to cuts in police budgets. The speed cameras are operated by civilians. Ignoring these fines leads to civil enforcement in some countries and criminal enforcement in others. It is unwise to ignore them as you could be arrested on a future visit to the country e.g. if using an EU airport as a hub even if not riding the bike.

Like with every other aspect of life, I have no idea what will happen to this system post Brexit. There is no agreement in place for what happens after March 2019.
