So I use the BMW connected cradle for navigation, plop in my smartphone (Samsung but I doubt it makes a difference) and connect it with the bike via bluetooth for the BMW app Connected drive(?).

I noticed it keeps interfering with the keyless signal, I keep my key in the tank bag and when I approach the bike (off) it detects it and starts up without issue but it soon throws up the error that the key isn't detected and restart will not be possible so on and so forth. Next stop, bike off, coffee, come back start it up, connect bluetooth, lose connection 2 mins into the ride.

To be frank the issue amounts to the annoyance of the yellow warning triangle on the dash and a slight panic check of the pack as I've managed to lose one key soon after getting the bike back in 2023.

Is this a frequent/knows issue otherwise?

Year-round riding enthusiast i.e. seasonal motorcycle popsicle.

is it RFI? I have not seen any mention on the GS forum

my keyless fob has become intermittently dumb

started last year so 7 years old

the root cause is an intermittent contact with the battery. I can simulate it with the battery cover off and moving the battery. There is a lot of space around the battery and once the spring contacts weaken, the battery can move. I have improved matters by installing a plastic wedge to push the battery towards the contact but it still manages to lose the connection now and then. I keep my fob in my jacket's inside pocket so if it loses connection I just slap my chest like Tarzan and it reconnects for another while.

Before identifying the root cause I tried different makes of battery. It's a shit design and for perhaps another 2 cents per unit they could have engineered a tighter fit for the battery. I wonder how many people have bought new fobs because of this simple failing, blaming the electronics not a mechanical connection?

I use the connected cradle also and haven't had any problems like that.

If the battery is a loose fit, was it replaced with the right type? The CR2025 is thinner than the 2032 (2.5mm vs 3.2mm to be exact).

Yes, they are marked CR2023 and the problem is not the depth of the battery but that it can move sideways as the spring contacts are not as springy as they once were
