Hi folks,

Just thought I'd share this with the forum. I have a 2021 R1250RS that came with the hard and top case. The top case has a small back rest. I ride two up with my wife occassionally and for her the back rest on the top case was a "game changer" in comfort. The only problem was that I didn't like the looks of the top case only (without the hard cases) on shorter rides ( an hour or two) when we didn't need the storage capacity. Plus it's a little bit of a hassle to add the top case for two up adventures. Did I mention I didn't like the looks of the top case only situation....?

I started to look for an aftermarket seat with a back rest, but then I stumbled on a backrest available from Pirates Lair. Google "Pirates Lair R1250RS" as I'm not allowed to post external links at this time.

While a little pricey, it's cheaper than a full-on seat and backrest combo. Plus I'm reasonably happy with the stock seat.

My wife loves it and claims it's even more comfortable than the back rest attached to the BMW topcase. This backrest is larger and sits lower and provides more lower back support.

Installation entails attaching a plate/bracket to the BMW rear rack. This takes maybe 15 or 20 minutes to do and is only necessary once. Then the backrest itself can be inserted into the bracket and held in place with a screw/clamp. Adding and removing the backrest is then a 30 second ordeal at most.

besides the subjectivity of the looks w/wo topcase my better half after trying out friend's chopper with "sissy bar" backrest such as this - low to mid-back position - prefers the topcase with the support being higher.

Suppose with acceleration and lower support (not that I do any Rossi moves when going 2-up) it can make her upper half sort of lag behind lower back. Also the topcase is larger overall so it might be some psychological effect as to how much you've got behind you.

But it is the eternal debate between esthetics and practicality...

Year-round riding enthusiast i.e. seasonal motorcycle popsicle.

Quality product. It does work quite well. I can still use my BMW Softbag. It will still fit on that rack, if you substitute the handwheel fastener for a socket/pan head screw.
