How do you keep your feet cool behind those big cylinder heads? What boots do you wear? I have worn BMW "All Around" boots for the past decade, but in warm weather I'm thinking about keeping the feet cool. Anyone try riding "shoes"? I wonder about the safety of such footwear, but I need a boot with some toe room, which a lot of boots don't have (have enlarged toe joints that are uncomfortable in tight boots), and some venting...without spending $300 or more. |

In my experience, the heaver the boot the less heat you feel on very hot days. But the heat coming off the cylinders doesn't really bother me much until the temperature gets over 90 degrees F and you are riding slowly in a city. That is when I start to feel it. The heat coming off of the cylinders of my R1200RS is an improvement over the heat coming off of the cylinders of the R1100 and R1150 bikes that I have owned in the past.

The heat coming off my R1200RS is nothing like that coming off the S1000XR, especially when the XR's fan came on. In 2019, France had a 43C heat wave and I had scorched ankles from the heat as I popped out for a short ride in jeans & trainers.

My old R1100R, the one with the oil coolers mounted above the cylinders, got so hot one day while riding in 100-degree F weather at freeway speeds that the glue holding the sole of one of my boots melted, came unstuck and started to peel back. Shoe Goo to the rescue once I reached the rally site.

Daytona short boots, I’ve got a couple of pairs now, you can get them in extra wide, are they available Stateside? They may be a bit pricey though, I got mine whilst working in Germany. |

In really hot weather, where I'm wearing a mesh jacket, I wear these. They're very well ventilated.

I wear these year round in the heat of the valley of the sun in Az. I haven't noticed enough heat to bring it to my attention. |

Never had an issue with boots and heat. Then again, always had waterproof motorcycle boots…so well-insulated. Honestly had more issues with overheating in leathers on hot days.

There was gravel on the road and I didn't pay enough heed to the warning signs. Thankfully nobody else involved and myself and the bike just took a slide down the road. I was really impressed at how well my summer kit faired. TCX boots - just got scuffed up as you can see Oxford Barton Kevlar lined jeans - Did just rip through but I've had grazes just as bad falling off a pushbike. I was just starting to move around to try not to wear a single spot when I came to a stop. Alpine stars SMX gloves - Ripped the thumb on one hand, other hand barely marked. Triumph textile jacket - Small tear and one adjustment popper. The bike slid along the cylinder head, driveshaft and top box. It did wear through the MaMo X-head and put a small hole in rocker cover so I wasn't able to ride away. 5mph slower and I think I would have got away with it. |

And when I do, it's thru my Daytona boots and usually at the point I'm getting out of traffic or shutting the bike off. And once you're moving, the heat from the jugs dissipates quickly. I'm not saying it's nothing, but I use the same boots year round. I have Daytona Road Star GTX and love 'em. They also come in multiple widths - 5 I believe. available in the US with great support from Helmut at www.helimot.com
