I can't answer that. But it's basically manipulating the air temp. sensor, which according to the Accelerator website, only comes into play during throttle movement. The Booster Plug is using similar tech. If you search in the threads, there have been discussions on Booster Plug, as well as Hilltop tuning. Lots of testimonials

Looking into this issue more, there seems to be a bodge workaround that could work, which would be disconnecting the lambda sensor.

Does anyone know if this could cause longterm issues or if it even works?

I had a MK 1 Honda Crossrunner for a while. The V4 engine in that suffered horribly with surging at low constant throttle openings, such as when obeying urban speed limits.

A cottage industry developed around making fixes for that, and so I removed the O2 sensor in the exhaust, replacing it with a blanking plug, and fitted a so-called O2 eliminator plug into the wiring in place of the sensor to fool the ECU so that it did not register errors due to the absence of the sensor.

However, although that worked, and improved things, I have never felt anything remotely similar on either the 1200 or 1250 boxer engines, so there may be a fault on yours.

Never had this on my 2015 RS but after the first service, 2017 RS around 1000 miles I went across europe, got as far as Norway and had possibly the same issue.
Maybe because the bike was fully loaded going away I never felt it but once I did I could not loose the uneven running.
Can only describe it as either an oval crankshaft, 4 cylinder running on 3, just not right and unbalanced engine, with vibration, waiting for failure.
After one week of local use on a light bike I loaded up my tent etc. and came home.
Yes I did try all settings , rain,road,dynamic, cruise but no way could I get rid of this.
I spent the whole trip back, 1200 miles, waiting for the bike to seize, hand over the clutch like the old two stroke days.
It probably didn't help that the old forum was full of poor running reports, clutch units being loose and replaced I read while looking for an easy cure on holiday.
At least I had the newer engine so no green stains from a water pump bedding in!!
I have no idea what it was, took the bike to Ocean BMW in Plymouth wishing I could have my old bike returned but to their credit they gave the bike a warranty check.
Never reported anything being found and I still felt it was wrong for 10 miles, maybe looking for trouble, somehow I 'forgot' this riding home across dartmoor.
It it has never repeated and the bike has now covered 12000 miles.
Maybe just one engine management connector was not fully home from new or first service, maybe I got some water in the fuel across europe, redex fuel cleaner and super unleaded shell is now the diet and all is good.
Should add - nothing has been warranty replaced, clutch and water pump so far so good !!!!!!!!!! (fingers now crossed)

Agreed, PCV and re-mapping should not be needed for the standard engine to run smoothly. At best it’s band aid to cover up the problem rather than address it.

I’m on my 3rd RS, ridden loads of demo versions and loan bikes, and been on the forum since the first one started. This is a rare though not unheard of issue. (Who remembers the ‘thrumming In 4th gear issue?) I’ve not experienced what you are describing and it’s not normal. My advice is get the problem fixed first and then if you want go even smoother, faster, louder, more economically, then try a PCV or similar.

I have a 2016 RS and the fueling is very smooth throughout the range.

I´m gonna get a BMW check up of the bike....to at least put my mind at rest, and at worst find that I have bought a junker. There is a warranty so hopefully that should / might cover any issues they might find.

If not I´m gonna be having serious words with the guy that sold me the bike.

To recap; R1200 RS Iconic (Sport SE) 2016, previously at 30mph in 2nd gear and 40mph in 3rd gear, approx. 3200rpm, the bike surged back and forth as though on a bumpy road.
I have now found a tuning shop who could carry out the work. CJS Racing http://cjsracing.co.uk/
I went to them last Wednesday 16th. Following their work the change to my bike is fantastic. I was never overly concerned about more power but the smooth running is a revelation. All the jerkyness at 3200 rpm is gone. I didn’t realise it was rough before at other revs but it is smoother all the way up the rev range now. It is almost as though all the roads that I ride on have had all the minor defects and potholes repaired. There is more power. Unfortunately my fuel cons have not improved but Chris at CJS did warn me that this would happen. The true test was a blind trial conducted by my pillion. I had not told her that any changes had been made but upon returning home after a ride out this afternoon she said the bike was a lot smoother.

How much is the tune and is it undetectable to the BMW diagnostic system?

The usual price is £299 but I'm sure he would do a group discount if approached. Regarding "Is it undetectable?", you would need to contact Chris at CJS Racing. I have put a sticker on my ECU box and the data communication plug "Do not up-date software"

Blast from the past...I started this thread but have been inactive, on many levels, for the last 18 months. I’ve been working in Hong Kong for that time - necessity not choice - which has been a far longer stay due to economic drama caused by protests/virus/protests/virus/security law etc etc. I’ve only been home to Connecticut to see my wife (and RS) twice in that time. Grim. Sooo I’ve not really ridden the bike at all and have dropped off the forum - but I now hope to be coming home in 8-9 weeks and thought I’d explore new tires etc on here...and LO! my thread is still going! It’s good to be back...soon...but sad that I’m not alone with the bike issue!? I’ll let you know if it’s still the same when I get back!

Ps when I last started the bike after sitting for 8 months...it fired up first turn. No trickle charger. Just boom. Brilliant.

I'm going to get my 2016rs given a once over by an ex bmw tech in a couple of weeks.
I simply can't cope with the the surge issue, I even thought the suspension was faulty when driving round a tight s bend.
I mentioned to the tech that I was going to visit hilltop to get them to take a look and he suggested that he should test the bike beforehand.
I'll be interested to see what he makes of it.
Plus, the wife says "if you're spending 360 on something you can't see, then you have to keep the rs for another 12 months", this is because I have been thinking about trading the rs for a 900xr. I would miss the power of the 1200 though.

I thought mine had been fixed but sadly not. It’s pretty bad in low gears and only really goes away at motorway speeds.

The suggestions to try the different modes are good. As is running in a different gear for any chosen speed so that you move up or down the rev range.

Maintaining a "Responsive Gear" of course (can you tell I read the IAM book many moons ago?)

You can find a sweet spot.

And - I'm surprised you're knocking the cruise control. It's probably my most used switch. I'm on it all the time.

I don't mean "all the time I'm moving". I mean I use it umpteen times every ride. At any speed, from 20 to xxx.

The beauty is you can touch the cruise switch 1 click up or down and you can move away from the surge point. And you get to stretch your hands any old time. And surprise people by riding with both arms outstretched just for fun, or simply waving (or gesticulating) with your right hand.

Regarding modes - on day 1 I was fairly unimpressed, but over time I now swap modes more and more during a journey. Often deliberately starting the day in RAIN mode as I get out of the urban world and get my brain into gear, moving up to DYNAMIC as the traffic thins out and the road gets more interesting. Funnily enough I come into RAIN mode when the heavens open. And RAIN mode is a boon on our single track twisties. It just softens things up and eliminates the twitchiness that DYNAMIC offers. Handy when slow riding in town or on a strange road.

I told an IAM observer once that I was using RAIN mode when he was on my tail and I could see him thinking "mmm, good idea".

Of course ROAD mode in the middle gets a fair bit of use too.

Funnily enough, I have found myself still in RAIN mode after a long ride and truly felt I hadn't been missing out much.
