I have to admit I haven't paid too much attention to this as the bike's been dealer-serviced and to date hasn't used a drop of oil between changes. But I feel I at least need to know the answer to this. KC100->CB100N->CB250RS--------->DL650AL2->R1200RS |

If you have a center stand on your bike use that to check your oil level. If you do not have a center stand (were there ever any R-bikes made without one?) then it will take two people to check the oil level. One to hold the bike upright while the other person checks the oil level.

I don't think it makes any significant difference as long as the bike is on a level surface. Having the rear wheel an inch off of the ground when on the center stand will not make any difference in the oil level. But you can always try both methods and see of they give different results. However, it is likely more difficult to keep the bike exactly upright when it is done so by the rider. At least placing it on the center stand will always provide consistent results.

Ah, you got me  What I should have said was that I do indeed looked at the level occasionally (on the centre stand, as I do it alone), and the level when it comes back from being serviced has always been the same as just before I take it in, with no topping up ever having been needed. But I'm just unsure whether that's indeed the correct way to make the reading KC100->CB100N->CB250RS--------->DL650AL2->R1200RS |

I've gone by the manual on mine. Says get it up to temp, side stand it for 5-10 minutes and put the bike on center stand to check oil level. The mind is the limiting factor |
