Maybe I’ve just been lucky but I have yet to have more than 1 breakdown in 40 years of riding, that was the rear wheel bearings collapsing and welding themselves to the rear spindle - could have been nasty but turned out ok. No on board toolkit or spares would have helped out on that occasion , the bike needed to be transported home for repair ( I still own the bike). |

I carry a small Torx set plus what is under the saddle. Apart from that I have a newly acquired Rocky Creek 12V Tyre Inflator and puncture repair kit, an RAC membership card plus BMW SOS - Nothing else. I figure with a bike not quite 2 years old my most likely breakdown is a puncture. 19 Plate R1250RS Exclusive with "bells & whistles" & full colour matched luggage |

I added the 30L top to this one after seeing Lee's on his RS, IMO, it was a good choice. Must admit, I've carried a lot of kit 24/7 on most of the motors [ listed above ]. When I did the police motor cone courses, panniers were the order of the day for the majority there. Rarely lane filter in my AO, it's frowned upon by leo's. |

In the Yukon, Northwest Territories and parts of Alaska your a long ways from any civilization so it's best to have some basic tools. In a lot of those areas you can't call for recovery unless you have or rent a Sat phone.

I want to have the tool available to them if they have the knowledge to use them. I've also been in a position to stop and help another motor rider without tools who used mine to get back on the road a few times. Even not planning on having to camp, break down at 9pm [ sun barely sets and at that hour it's like noon bright ] on the Dalton, you may need to camp off the road. No tent or shelter along [ hell there aren't any motels on that 400+ mile road ] you could easily succumb to hypothermia on the side of the road. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. I'm an old boy scout. Their moto? Be prepared. I'm an old Marine, their moto is improvise, adapt and overcome. Those two organizations formulated my thinking for the rest of my life. Following both moto's has saved me countless aggravation and got me out of trouble more then a few times in the last 60 years. LOL The mind is the limiting factor |

Since this has turned into a question of where to pack the camping equipment, I'll note that the big blue BMW roll-top duffel handles 50-60 liters and straps easily onto the passenger seat and front third of the top rack. This holds all my camping equipment (Mountain Hardware 2-man ultra-light, neo-air mattress, enlightened equipment comforter, Helinox Zero chair, MSR pocket rocket stove, and pot) in addition to some clothes, rain gear, extra shield and gloves. “A good man always knows his limitations.” |
