In a static test I�m sure you are correct, but with a bit of forward motion, wind blast, gravity etc I suspect most of it just blows off the back and what�s left gets mopped up by the hugger! 😁

Then, there's no need to install a mudsling to keep that fancy shock clean and protected..........

The tire surface speed is the same as the MC velocity and most of the tire is in the wake (i.e., shadow) of the engine, chassis and rider. There's darn little wind blast in a wake and water is 815-times denser than wind

I agree, no need to install a mudsling, a plastic aberration that�s also migrated from the GS. I�ve not heard of many shocks going south on this forum (or the previous one).

For my R1250RS I put on Puig's rear hugger as in my eyes it completes the area and also protects the rear shock.
Anyway, I had the rear shock replaced after only 1500km due to a small oil leak (!). Warranty of course, no questions asked.

I plan to keep this bike a good long while. So any shock failure will be out of warranty and coming out of my own pocket and a replacement is very expensive. In the UK where it will be exposed to rain and potentially snow and salt it seems sensible to protect the shock at a modest cost. Its presence is also likely to add value on a resale as it will give the perception of a careful owner.

I don't worry about the longevity of the shock, and I have never fitted a hugger to any other bike. The spray up the back of my legs does annoy me, hence a Puig hugger on my bike.
