Navigation » Not able to load maps

Due to some pretty ordinary health issues, I have been away from the forum for some time. Is good to be back and riding again, but, boy, do the skills atrophy...

I was told by the dealer when I bought the bike new in July 2015, that maps on the Nav 5 are updated free for life. I have never bothered to update as I usually know where I am going and don't use the bike around town much. Apart from an occasional reminder that the current map is out of date, the current map is fit for purpose. However, I now need an update as I am planning one last long trip to parts less traveled.

The trouble is, that when I connect to my computer and Garmin Express loads up, there is nowhere that allows me to update maps. Going to the Garmin websites is worse than confusing - bloody irritating is just a start. I tried talking to Garmin, but that was fruitless.

Has anyone got a quick fix?

Oh, and I am looking for the Australian maps.

Garmin Express home screen will have a number in a circle (blue?) in the corner of the device icon if there are any updates for it...

This is a good news/bad news scenario.

Good news: you are running the latest software on the device.

The bad news (as learned from scanning various Google results) is it seems the early Nav 5's didn't come with "lifetime maps"; I've also seen reference to threads on forums that claimed in Aus/NZ they *never* came with lifetime maps :-(

Hmm, I (apparently wrongly!?) assumed that by stating the country you meant you were after out-of-the-ordinary maps - obviously if Australia's your default territory then it will be fine!

@Paul B , I don't know for sure but would expect that Garmin Express would indicate the version of the maps currently installed on the device, even if no free updates were available? If so, maybe there is a problem correctly identifying the device?

To find out how old the maps are on the Nav go to Settings
Click on Map and Vehicles
Scroll down and click on myMaps

Thanks, Paul B. I actually purchased the CD, delivered on Friday. Unfortunately, the CD will not recognise or communicate with my Nav V, even though it is attached to the computer and Garmin Express is up and running. I have exhausted all the recommended workarounds and have now contacted the distributor to see what they suggest.

The version of the existing map on my device is "CN Australia & New Zealand NT 2015.40 -HERE ALL", but that does not appear to be relevant to the task at hand.

I am starting to feel that I may have been shafted by the dealer/Garmin/BMW from the outset.

Maybe my problems with install may help?
My first attempt somehow was incomplete, 2015 and I never got updates. Local bmw dealership Ocean deleted off my laptop and re-installed and suddenly I get new updates.
Glad to say the new laptop last year just downloaded no problem and no trip to Ocean.
Do you have access to another pc to try a new attempt?

Update....

The Ebay vendor proved to be extremely helpful and responded almost instantly to my query. He sent me a Dummy's Guide to manually installing the map and, after a few minor missteps on my part, maps are now installed and operative.

Big shout-out to Dave H - his assistance and advice was invaluable.

Interestingly, regarding the "lifetime maps", the vendor had this to say:

"You're not the only one in regards to the lifetime maps - recently after the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer comission) started to investigate, the big companies were doing a dodgy on customers, and as such, did not keep good on their promises.
Navman, Garmin and TomTom was trying to offer free map updates to sell more brand new units and discourage existing owners to update their old devices in the past 3 years, and entice them to purchase a brand new GPS with this offer... unfortunately, ACCC started investigating after several owners stopped receiving the free updates (in their fine print, the apparent 'lifetime' map update was only valid during the warranty period, and not when the warranty ran out) - and since then were ordered to remove such a claim and misadvertising that confused the consumer with such a claim that was not valid..." He also gave the following link for those interested in the bastardy that goes on.
