High bhp for a 1250 twin. Numbers from BMW may be right (German approach). Harley? Don't know.

Interesting article... I have to say I am attracted to their new models... from a design/power angle... but the premium price always will put me off... heavier / shineyer costs more is their ethos methinks...
To tempt me they would need to be competetively priced... and offer rediculously long warranties and dealer back up...
the article suggests.. these would be viewed in the same way Ducati-ifioso view the monster verses the top sports bike.. a lesser model... perhaps? I have encountered dealer arrogance in all sorts of automotive outlets... the more you spend the more they want to help.... percieved lesser models... not so much..

Dealers need to learn.... a good initial buying experience... makes brand loyalty... and a poor experience alienates for a long time... There are certain brands I would now never consider based on past dealer experience..

A trip to Warrs in Chelsea to see this new model will be interesting... when it arrives... but as I grow older... my tastes become less expensive and as my pockets shrink... and I hanker back to less complicated, more old school BMWs...

Harley Might be a flirtation... but reality is.. £20+ thousand is too much for a new bike... for most .. and the old school Harley riders wont always accept you into the circle of brotherhood.... as my friend discovered on a new Night Rod..

The front view of the Pan America is odd.
I like the looks of the Bronx. They should put the 145 HP engine in the Bronx.
Wonder what the weight of each bike is.

I appreciate that KTM and Ducati both produce 1200 class twins with more than 145 bhp and are more powerful than the RS.

I concede I may have overstated a reverence for achieving those numbers from a 1200 class motor.

However, even when Harley made the 2nd gen V'Rod, it only made a claimed 122 bhp (It was coy about that number too).

To make an increase of 20% the new Harley will need to spin higher. If it is conventional it will need larger valves, inlets, cams and have a shorter stroke. All of these design choices will rob the motor of low speed power and torque. It will also need to have stronger cases and there will probably be as great a reduction in flywheel weight as can be done.

The result will not pull like a Harley. It will be a more peaky motor than the VRod and far more peaky than the sucessful, and surviving Sportsters.

If Harley does combine all these brand charactistics with a high (er, ish) bhp it will be a real achievement. But if BMW can't do it, I don't see Harley having the ability or where-with-all to do better..

Don't forget that if the owners of the new bikes are not happy with their power or noise, I am sure that H-D will be glad to sell them some Screaming Eagle performance upgrades.
