Exhausts and Engine » Won't rev above 6500 rpm

I just bought a 1016 R1200RS with 6000 miles on it. I took it out for a romp in the country this evening and found out it won't rev above 6500 rpm. Is this some form of break-in governor or rev limiter that can be defeated, or does this bike have a problem? Please don't tell me this is normal for these bikes!

Your tacho will display the reduced redline when the motor is cold. If the redline is at 9500 and the motor won't rev, something needs fixing.

The engine was definitely at normal operating temperature. When it hit 6500 rpm, it felt like the throttle opening was automatically being closed down to the point of running at a steady 6500 rpm, and no higher.

Exhaust flap valve issue? 6500rpm is too high for limp home mode.

Once warm, you should be able to rev out to the limiter (probably not in 6th though....)

Are both cylinders firing?

Both cylinders are firing and it’s pulling with full power, right up to the 6500 rpm point. Then it stays at that rpm and will rev no higher, no matter how long you hold the throttle wide open.

The original owner had an Akrapovic muffler installed when new, and the bike had always been run with this set up. 2 days ago, I switched it back to the original muffler to quiet things down a bit. I rode it 20 miles to work and didn’t try to rev it out during that ride. When I started the bike after work, I noticed the triangle on the instrument cluster was lit and the wrench symbol was on. I wondered what might be causing this, since the bike had a full service less than 1000 miles ago. It was during the ride home when I was on a back road and using full throttle to get around a truck that I discovered the 6500 rpm ceiling.

The plot thickens.....

You may have some unexpected "user mods".

The plot gets even thicker...

As a test, last night I switched back to the Akrapovic muffler. Fired the bike up and the check engine lights were still on. Fired it up again this morning and the check engine lights were now off. Rode the bike to work and was able to wind the engine up to 8500 rpm! Why in the world would this bike prefer the Akra instead of the OEM muffler??

Has someone wedged some rags or similar into the OEM can?

Thought I should get back to you guys with the end of the story. The answer to the problem was to ride the bike and let the computer catch up with the changes. Interestingly, it was a gradual process. At first, it threw up the triangle and wrench symbols and set the rev limiter to 6500 rpms. After a couple of cycles of starting, riding and restarting, it dropped the wrench symbol completely and the triangle after a few minutes of running. Somewhere along the way, it moved the rev limit back up to 8500 rpms. Now the caution lights do not come on and the bike rides as normal.
