Exactly! My last stress-inducing side stand fiasco was when I was on the same camber right next to a buddy on his 2018 1200GS. His bike had plenty of lean while mine was almost vertical. And he had a foot pad enlarger which added (slightly) to the length of his side stand.

I don’t want to imply that I had side stand envy, but I wasn’t comforted by mine being longer. 😜

Sounds like Ged will be needing something like this under his side stand to stop sinkage when parking on the soft stuff.

The idea that it could not be a design flaw I did not have because it is so bad.
But you're right, it could be some BMW engineer had something in mind with this construction.

So I wrote to BMW Motorrad to give me the reason for the chosen construction of the side stand.
Should BMW answer me I will report here - I'm curious!

Dear Mr. Gerst,
Thank you for your message of February 8, 2018.
We regret if you are not satisfied with the state of your BMW R 1200 RS on the side stand.
In fact, the BMW R 1200 RS is a bit more upright, than some other models. However, the R 1200 RS complies with all legal requirements regarding the position on the side support and is therefore homologated for public road traffic.
  
If no changes have been made to the suspension settings and your authorized workshop confirms that the side support is correctly installed and there is no defect in the mount, the bearing bushes on the frame or the side support itself, we assume that your motorcycle is in order.
As a general rule, when turning off the motorcycle, always turn the handlebar as far left as possible. This is how you achieve the largest tilt and the safest position.
We can not offer you a repair solution in this matter.
Of course, you will still be able to cut open the side stand or have a shorter version installed. For example, the side support for the R 1200 RS with the country version China is shorter by about one centimeter.
However, we must point out that we take no responsibility for all amendments.

I have been following this with interest, as always, and would offer this little tale for your possible interest/amusement.

I am short of leg, have the lowest seat fitted and normally manage well enough on this bike with its height. I was in Yorkshire last year staying at accommodation behind a pub. The gate to the parking area was locked at night with a rough track allowing access. I was heavily loaded with fishing, photographic and other gear and getting on and off was difficult, even using the side-stand. In reality, probably impossible without the ability to flick the side-stand out and use this to dismount.

My early morning departure found me at the locked gate, on board the bike with a promise from the patron to open the gate for me if I beeped the horn a couple of times. I beeped several times and no-one arrived. I was stuck sitting on the bike with the camber of the track extreme enough (in the wrong direction of course!) that it was impossible to put the side-stand down. I genuinely did not know what to do as I did not have sufficient foot purchase to move the bike by paddling, especially as it was so heavy and the ground was rough gravel and stones! I had two options, one was to try to get off the thing without the help of the side-stand- very dodgy- and the other to just lay the bike down on its side. Neither option was good. Happily, the caretaker arrived and rescued me by opening the gate and I rode off.

Aside from feeling foolish and laughing at the ridiculous situation I found myself in, it did illustrate just how stupid the side-stand length actually is. I am getting my local engineering shop to chop 15mm off the stand next week!

Oh DJ..... had you followed my advice and got them spangly platform boots you wouldn't have found yourself in that predicament.

Bravo- I did! I did get the spangly boots with the uplifting built in and very good they are too, as I have said in the recent past. However, the tragic story that I related was before I got them. In fact, I don't think that even they would have saved me on that occasion. The camber and the loose surface would have got me anyway.

I am certain that the way forward is the shorter side-stand. I have had too many other problems with it, including yesterday at a petrol station where I had to turn around and come back again, pointing the other way. Had I parked it on the side-stand in the original orientation, a puff of wind would have toppled it over. Far too risky and yes, I could have put it on the centre stand but I would have had to get off the thing first innit? Catch 22.

You mentioned interest in the spangly, uplifting boots (Daytona) after I mentioned them I remember. Did you get them? They are highly recommended...... for short-asses! Very good boots anyway.
