I live in North Yorkshire and ride on a lot of minor roads in farming country, so my RS throws up a lot of dirt.
Started with a MachineArt Mudsling which protects the shock and the partially exposed rectifier/regulator under the wheel arch. Despite the claims on the website, it does little to keep the swingarm, rear end of the bike, or back of my legs clean.
I bought a Puig Hugger from Pyramid Plastics, removed the Mudsling because Nippy Norman told me that you can't fit both. Having seen reports of the rear end dropping down when the torsion arm bolt is removed, I had my dealer fit the Hugger while the bike was in for tyres.
The Hugger effectively protects the shock, the swingarm, rear of the bike and me, but does allow some dirt to reach the wheel arch and rectifier.
Actually it is easy to refit the Mudsling with the Hugger if you are willing to trim about 5"/12 centimetres off the bottom end of the Mudsling.
Pyramid Plastics also sell a Ductail rear mudguard and a front Fenda Extenda for the RS.

I had the rear Mudsling from Wunderlich on my R1200RS.
If i dismounted it (because of selling the R1200RS), the Suspension looks like new

I hope it will be fit on my new RS1250 too...

I just spray the damper etc with acf50 and wash them ever so often, i prefer to see whats going on with spring etc,

I just have the Puig hugger, it keeps nearly all crap off the damper anyway.

I put a mudflap on the bottom of my AvantGuard. This controls the detritus from the front wheel; reducing splash/mist and the risk of a rear tire puncture.



The front fender is a bit of a joke, as coverage is greatly limited and the construction is flimsy. The mudflap is hardly noticeable under the engine, mostly eliminating the "dork factor":

I like the idea but the base should be a slight V shape turning the water off to the right and left, the pictured arrangement may increase water flow driven into the rear wheel and could risk washout at speed.

With the mudsling fitted the damper is still easily visible and easy to wash plus I spray with ACF 50 for good measure.
It also protects the bottom of the rectifier which for some reason is exposed under the wheel arch, that is also sprayed with ACF 50.

Only had one ride so far, on absolutely filthy Yorkshire Dales roads.
The Ductail certainly keeps muck off the underside of the topbox and the rear subframes catch much less.
The fender extender protects the radiator, and the front of the engine apart from a small area right at the bottom.
The extender is a glue on fit to the outside of the mudguard. It seems remarkably secure so far, but I think I'll reinforce it with a couple of small bolts. I would usually be reluctant to drill the mudguard but I plan to keep the bike for several years, so it won't affect the value.

Hi, I’d be wary of using bolts unless they are well away form the tyre. The fender is flimsy as a flimsy thing and if the bolts end up running against the tyre it could do more harm than good. (That is unless you have the one that bolts to the brake callipers, in which case, crack on!)

That happened with an extender I fitted to my old F800GT because the bolts I used were a bit too long, it was fine when I put shorter bolts in. The RS mudguard is rather more rigid than that on the GT, and it's just the lateral corners of the extended mudguard that I think need a bit of extra fixing. Well to the sides of the tyre run.
The total thickness of the mudguard and extender will need just a 4mm bolt.

For those of you who live in an area where your dealer will not order an NZ rear mud guard, like in North America, you can make your own larger rear fender using a generic car rubber mud flap sold in auto accessory stores. Just pick up a large flexible rubber guard, cut to shape with heavy scissors, and fasten to the license plate holder and rear section of the frame with hardware bolts. That is what I did on my RS over a year ago and it has been working pretty well to keep mud off of the rear of my bike. What I really appreciate is that it hasn't fallen off yet.

Like yourself, I've fitted pretty much the same in an attempt to minimise the muck that gets thrown all over the bike.

I mentioned the Avant Guard engine protector in another post, but there is also a wider "rear fender" that is fitted to Australian/NZ bikes (I think?) but we can buy it over here.



The one on the right is the standard one. The part goes under the pillion seat and down to the number plate assembly.

You can see the extra width of the one on the left. You'll need to order part no. 46 62 8 543 348. My local BMW dealer got one form me in a couple of days.

The wider rear fender doesn't look any longer than the original. It's the increased length of the Pyramid Plastics Ductail I have fitted that keeps the muck off the topbox and to some extent the rear subframes.

I looked at the avant guard. I seem to remember that it isn't compatible with the BMW engine bars fitted to my RS.
