RE: Cost of mounting new Tire ??? - 2

I do my own tires ever since an independent fitter twisted the tube in my KLR's front tire. That blowout nearly put me in the hospital. I bought a Harbor Freight changer, some Mojo Blocks (nylon blocks to hold the wheel without scratching), a Parnes balancer, and a hand full of Motion Pro tire levers and have gotten pretty good with them. I install my tires for the cost of a little tire lube, a few self-adhesive balancing weights, and an occasional new valve stem...

Yeah I was thinking of treating myself with a No-Mar tire mounting machine for Christmas. I have 4 bikes now and will most likely get plenmty of use with it.
I currently do it by hand and as the tires become stiffer with technology, that makes it even harder with tire spoons.

Walk in with loose wheel & new tyre.

And I take the old tyre away and dispose of it at the council tip I’m passing on the way home.

I can understand the DIY approach if you live far from a facility, but I’ll get a lot of tyres changed for the costs shown above to kit out my (full) garage with machinery that will be little used.

ps - never had a beemer rear wheel balanced. No issues.

BoxerFan, There is an independent shop literally a block from my office in Chantilly that did have 2 used No-Mar changers for sale on Craig's List a few weeks ago. Brooks' Cycles, Jason Brooks 703 796-0040. I have used him before with loose Harley wheels and carry in tires for a cost of ~ $55 out the door, mount, balance, & disposal fee. I thought he was asking ~ $500 per machine. Perhaps it's worth considering. Stick.

Lucky for me here in Melbourne that we have Pablo's. I have been buying tyres from them since my TRX 850 - so that would be about 20+ years. They are knowledgeable, fast, get the job done right and are not expensive. AND they are true motorcycle enthusiasts.

I couldn't justify the cost of tyre changing equipment for the RS, except for 1 issue. The TPM device has a battery with a finite life. BMW says the whole device has to be replaced - the battery is unserviceable.

Youtube had a vid on the repair and replacement of the battery. It involves digging out the resin that seals the battery in, putting in a new button battery, and then filling up the area with hot glue from a hot glue gun.

In order to do that without a tyre changer at home it means at least 2 trips to the dealer for unmounting and mounting. I would much prefer to have the ability to do that at home.

Mr. Goat, that's a great price, was it the classic model? As I understand, there are several different models of No-Mar (manual) tire mounting machine. I think the Classic model offers a little more for less effort in mounting/dismounting the tire. After looking back on the website I just realized they are running Chrismas specials. The Classic model is now $499.

Do you not get charged a disposal charge for tyres there? (I must confess I've heard of people who chop their old bike tyres in two with a saw and hide them in black bin bags - shocking behaviour )

Same in Australia...council tip. It's always been called the tip since before I was born. But I just googled it (to see if Google understands "tip" - it does) and it's now called a Waste Management Facility.
