I rode to my dealer in Champaign yesterday and they were talking to me about it. They had been invited to go to Countryside and get bikes they wanted. They took an S1000RR, but said they had a lot of R9T inventory that have been slow sellers and voiced a poor inventory mix might have played into it. Do you have any different insight? |

Besides closing the BMW motorcycle dealership the owner of the dealership sold his two Mazda dealerships. All three of the dealerships were located in the south/west suburbs of Chicago. As I understand it he had bought a McClaren dealership (location?) within the past year and is keeping that dealership. Not sure what the reason was for closing the two car dealerships or the multi line dealership (BMW, KTM, Suzuki and Zero) as they seemed to be doing well. |

It sounds like that dealer was more of a hobbyist than a businessman. I have seen a lot of motorcycle shops close over my 56 years of buying motorcycles when they are run by enthusiasts who didn't have a clue how to run a business for very long.

We complain if the guy is too pro business then that personal touch / caring about the lifestyle is said to suffer, and on the other hand too much of the latter and the business never progresses and often fails. The balance point may depend on other factors that the business owner cannot control, including the cachet of products themselves.

One common trend here in SA is motorcycle enthusiasts, often competitive riders getting past their prime, get an agency either for bikes or distributing accessories so they can keep playing in the bike arena. Unfortunately, they regularly spend more time satisfying their need to play, and not enough time on making sure the business supplies customer service with some profit attached to it. Just a month ago I tried to order an Optimate from the local agent, and they had closed shop early on Thursday to have a long weekend. |
