There's nothing wrong with the actual devices. Smartphones are amazing incredibly useful things that have enriched all our lives. But there are problems with some of the services than run on them.

the NHS, in England at least, has put free wifi in all hospitals and GP surgeries. They want to keep you busy so you don't realise how long you have been waiting to be seen.

The hospitals in the SF Bay Area have policies (and technology) that prevents the use of cell phones to make voice phone calls, but do allow the use of the internet once WiFi access is obtained by the downloading hospital's app. That does keep things a lot more quiet, compared with everyone talking on their phones letting family and friends know what fun they are having while at the hospital. (Let those thumbs do the talking.)

My daughter and her half brained husband called today.
He went to the fridge and helped himself to a bottle of my beer and then sat looking at his phone for 20 minutes. He then went into the kitchen and helped himself to some of my wife's baking and then went back to his phone for another 20 minutes.
He then stood up and called to my daughter that it was time to go, as he wanted to watch some footy match on a channel I don't subscribe to and left.
Fortunately I prefer his silence to his usual insane gabbling on the few occasions he deigns to converse with me.

His uselessness isn't confined to the internet. I have to go round to do anything practical from changing a fuse to putting up a shelf.
He is good at drinking my beer and eating cake.
