There are times when riding that the sun is shining directly into your helmet's visor (for example, when the sun angle is low). Not only does it interfere with visibility (especially in canyon twisties with alternating sunlit and shaded roads!), but it makes the inside of the helmet hot.

I've seen visor things that are like the bill of a baseball hat, and I've seen internal "sun shades" in certain helmets, and I've seen "stick-on" sun shade strips for the upper part of the helmet visor, but without real world experience, I have no way of judging their value.

If you've had the sun-in-face problem (who hasn't?), what was/is your solution?

I use my helmet internal sun shield. It keeps my face cooler when looking at the sun.

I used to think that an internal sun shield was just a gimmick — until I got I got a helmet with one.

I never buy a helmet without a internal sun visor. Quick and easy to operate.

Come and live in Blighty you would hardly need worry about the sun,though you could then start a thread about best waterproofs to buy.

My helmet has a drop-down sun visor, which I find really useful - serves the purpose of sun glasses but is more useful on the bike as I can flip it up and down at will, as required. However, it doesn't help much when you've got direct, low sun shining directly into your eyes; you can then still get a complete - and somewhat terrifying - white-out.

So I also have a strip of standard black duct tape about an inch deep, running along the top of my visor. Unlike sun glasses/shades, this serves the same purpose as a fold-down sun visor/shade on a car. In normal use, it doesn't impede my vision at all, but if I ride round a bend and get hit in the face by the dreaded low winter sun, I can just incline my head very slightly and the sun is blocked by the duct tape.

Works a treat; costs nothing; entirely reversible - give it a try.

I have previously cut a strip from an old x-ray film. This was inserted between the shell and liner of the helmet. It worked very well and also had the benefit of being able to see through it, if necessary, directly at the sun.

Wouldn't even cross my mind to buy a helmet without an inner sunshield. And that's living on this rain soaked island. If I do get too much glare even with the sun visor, it is sure to pass soon through a change of direction or the next cloud.
You could always head predominantly west in the morning and east in the afternoon.

I have always used a strip of black electrical tape on my helmet face shields as a sun blocker. It has worked well for me and I can remove it and reinstall it to a different location if needed. The glue residue comes off easily with most any sort of shield-safe cleaner, even soap and water.

I've had low-angle glare, but not heat build-up.

I might try the tape thing, with painter's tape which doesn't leave a glue residue. As for the heat, that's partly due to my Puig touring windscreen which blocks a lot of airflow (the good thing, though, is I can ride with the face shield open...but then Catch-22 surfaces, because with it open any tape at the top would no longer do the job of blocking the sun. If it ain't one thing, it's another).

The flip down sun shade is a great thing, but I don't want to buy (another) helmet at the moment.

What brand of transition lenses do you use?
