I rode the F900XR and it's an okay bike. I prefer my 2016 R1200RS as I like the boxer engine and the shaft drive.

When the RS gets a bit older I might look at bikes in that price range but I don't think the BMW parallel twins will be on top of the list if I am going to have a chain driven bike. It is more likely to be Japanese. If my joints get too knackered, it might be a Piaggio MP3 500 with reverse gear.

Yep. Lots of chain-driven parallel twins in that size (or slightly smaller) range. No need to pay for a Lexus when the Toyota does the same thing at a lower price.

Good point, I can envisage the day when a smaller bike might suit me, but I’m reluctant to go back to chain drive - all my bikes have been shaft drive since 1984 ( Honda CX500). I like MC maintenance at home but messing with chains on a tour has zero appeal.
