Check your accessory socket spring and clean the internal contact area.

Having had a battery light up the ignition from keyless but then the dreaded slow turn/click no start I figured my 14month old battery was the issue.

A quick jump start from my power pack (only time I used it) and all was ok and has been for the last three months.

Today on removing the bmw can-bus charger from the socket I noticed it unplugged with very little resistance.

Moving it when plugged in felt like it was not always seated tight enough for an electrical circuit to be maintained.

A quick visual check and the area looked rusty/dirty where the two clips ground outwards from the bmw micro plug.

The inside of the socket was easily cleaned with a cloth and two wooded lolly sticks -- You do not want anything conductive inside this socket as they remain live, take care.

Just a spray of GT85/WD40 on the cloth wrapped around the wooden stick cleaned the chrome/stainless rim, it was dirt not rust.

Used the lolly stick to add more tension by closing the two prongs that the pin springs in on.

Maybe the combination of dirt and a lack of a tight spring could have caused the can bus charger to disconnect but the battery seems fine.

If in doubt, lubricate liberally with WD40 !!

Same thing two days ago, bike started but heated grips go on full despite not being used this year.

5 miles later I got two keys cut for my panniers (they are not 'bike matched') from blanks as I only had one key.

Checked they all worked and then got ready for a ride.

Just a 'click' and no start but gave it one more try after 5 seconds and started on the button?

30 mile ride home via edge of dartmoor and all ok, removed panniers/topbox and 2 hours later moved the bike, started again no problem.

Yesterday decided to check if maybe my error, battery connections not tight but all ok AND I lost one of the grommits (you know which one's!) but I had a spare.

Bike refused to start, one click, flat/finito/fubar etc. Used my jump/powerpack - again starts on the button so not a bike issue, which is good, always been a 'one press starter'.

So I guess "good doesn't come cheap and cheap never no good" so that low cost Exide unit, despite bmw charger, used every two/three weeks still killed it in 14 months (12 month NN Warranty!)

Now ordered the Yuasa higher output unit from Halfords for home delivery which I should have done originally - always liked their batteries since my YAS1 Yamaha had them in 1970.

Yuasa YTX14H-BS 12V High Performance Maintenance Free VRLA Battery

Maybe the connector issue so perhaps a direct connector would be a better idea - still have my optimate from my R1200ST so may use that instead of this 'via the computer' option.

That battery will fit my 2016RS?

As my original order was for two identical exide batteries (one for this 2017 RS and one for my 2005 R1200ST) I suspect they are the same size/capacity across the range of many R1200 for last 10 years or more.
I realise this uk site would be no use for you to order but they do show the battery ranges and it seems, as I suspect, that little has changed on battery typre.
