Exhausts and Engine » Engine fault code - but no loss of performance…?

Hello all. I have had my engine light come on on my R1250rs. 9,500 miles on the clock. It seems fairly innocuous and the bike seems to be working as normal but the light is on and there’s a message in the dash telling me to take it to a dealer.

I’ve had this happen once before - I selected gear with the side stand down and the engine cut out, and on restarting the engine fault came up. My bike normally tells be things aren’t working if I do this (anyone else have that - or do none of you ever select gear with the side stand diwn…? :)) but this time it was an engine fault and it seemed to stick around even after turning off the bike and turning it on again.

Thus time tho I didn’t stall or anything. Any tips much appreciated. Does disconnecting the battery help…?

Yes, still in warranty. Apparently long wait times to get it looked at though.

I found this on a GS site: https://adventurebikerider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51107; the OP's experience there sounds a lot like mine, and if you scroll down to the bottom there's a note about exhaust valve clearances requiring adjustment which seems to have addressed the issue. I'm sure Vines will just roll their eyes at me though if I mention that to them! :)

Probably best to just book it in as you suggest, though as I say it seems perfectly rideable.

I wouldn't be surprised if the latest Euro 5 bikes will throw up an engine code if something is not right with the emission control equipment. It might not affect running, but it might make the ECU unhappy.

If you know anyone with GS911 they can read fault code too. Reading should not use one of their VINs
