Hi, I am new to this forum though not new to the RS boxer. Back in the late 90's I rode a R1100RS. Liked it so much, I bought a new 2001 R1150RS. Years later, after riding FJR1300, F800GT and Z900RS, I am considering a 2016 R1200RS with over 30K miles. Need advices on the followings:

1. What might be the potential issues with this mileage?
2. What repair/maintenance issues can I expect? And costs? (other than 36K scheduled service)
3. What is the general opinion on a reasonable price, with all factory packages including premium?

I can’t advise on US pricing.

An older bike with what some regard as “high mileage” should be considered on condition and service history.

Is it being sold by the original owner who should know all about it?

Or from a dealer (or owner) who knows nothing of the service history and previous X number of owners?

I’d be happy if it is clean and tidy with all the normal consumables in good condition. A recent service would be good.

New tyres and pads are in plain sight.

Then negotiate a price that seems good to you.


I’m biased with my 7 year old 37K bike still going strong with routine (DIY) servicing.

I'm the second owner of a 2016 with >30k miles. The only real issue I have experienced is my fuel gauge isn't working consistently. Based on what I have read on this forum, it isn't an uncommon issue. I am just resetting my trip meter at every fill-up, and trusting I can get 150 miles or so. I'm sure there are some other common issues that are specific to the RS, but I have never been more happy with a motorcycle. The RS strikes such a great balance between function, performance, comfort, form, etc. I too came from an FJR, and the RS suits me.

As far as prices, KBB is a good resource, or just compare prices on cycletrader. I haven't checked prices in a little bit, but I'd guess $~10-12k.

I would call that Barely run in at 30k miles

There is a 2016 model over here in New Zealand that I was talking to its owner last month whilst out on a ride with over 160,000 miles on the clock (267,000 + km's to be exact)
He bought it as an ex rental bike which never get an easy life but it only had 30,000 km's on the clock at 2 years of age he commutes 6 days a week on this bike rain hail or shine in a mix of traffic and motorway

The biggest thing was generally wear and tear of paint rubbing and stone chips slight oxidation of bolts and a few spots on the frame but this bike lives outside in the weather at his work for 12 hours a day and lives under a carport at home

it was a little bit noisy engine wise but he reckons it burns maybe 200 to 300 mls of oil between changes of 10,000 kms distance

He had replaced the cam chain once and fork seals twice along with 3 sets of brake pads in the front and many tires still on the original drive shaft that he greases EVERY service
Also replaced the Rectifier unit once

He plans to ride it for another 5 years until he retires and then he will buy a new bike as a treat to himself

He has also done all of his own maintenance since he bought the bike as that way he knows it has been done properly
