Hello all,

I looked at a used 2016 R1200RS yesterday. While checking it out I found two peculiarities:

1. There was an electrical buzzing sound just above the right cylinder. It started when the ignition was turned on and it didn�t stop until the ignition was turned off again.

2. When turning the handlebar all the way to the right, the clutch lever touched the mirror stem.

Would you say that either of those are red flags not to buy the bike? It only has 12,000 km (7,500 miles) and the price is pretty good.

There were some scratches on the underside of the left cylinder but no other indication of a major crash. (OEM levers and bar ends, mirrors etc).

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

The clutch lever can touch the mirror if the mirror is not adjusted properly, but make sure the forks are in proper alignment. The bike makes all kinds of normal noises after the ignition is turned on.

The buzzing is probably the electric fuel pump. If so that would be 100% normal.
The clutch lever touching the mirror stem is a mild concern, could be evidence of a previous accident. You did mention scuffs on the underside of the left cylinder. If the bike was simply dropped on the left side it would really be no big deal, although something is probably tweaked for the lever to touch. Mine comes close on the left but does not actually touch. Make sure the mirror stem is pushed fully forward of course, which is where it should be, with adjustment being done at the mirror ball joint.

I agree the noise could be the electric fuel pump...but I have a 2016RS and I can not hear it.....ever!! I have never put my ear to the tank to listen. But if it is loud or noisy it may a problem.

There is a faint line on the mirror stem and base to help get the mirror stem in the correct location.

I would also check the left and right controls to make sure they are at the same position.

when I turn on my 2016 bike, there are a few relays clicking, circuits energising and the speedo sweeping. Once all of this has settled, there is a high pitch whine which is more perceptible if you put your head alongside the tank. It's a high enough frequency to mean that some people might not hear it. The bike has always done it and I am not worried. I have no idea which component is making the noise but it is similar to the noise made by a solenoid, small pump or motor. Most likely the fuel pump or the ABS pump.

Thanks a lot for all your responses. I really appreciate it. Sounds to me like the buzzing is rather normal for these bikes. I'll look at the handlebar/mirror issue again. Just to check that the mirror is properly seated and that the forks are in alignment.
