The overnight crossing from Plymouth means more time in Spain. Plus, with the rise in fuel and hotel prices in France, the cost of riding to the Pyrenees through France has increased quite a bit. The 2 night crossing from Portsmouth makes less sense as it takes a lot of time from riding and it is an expensive way to nurse a hangover, after over-indulgence on the first night.

I’m going outbound from Plymouth to Santander and returning from Santander to Portsmouth, the timings are pretty good. |

Planning a few days in the North of Scotland at the end of May/early June (when there's loads of daylight) to cross off some roads I've not yet travelled. There aren't many! |

But a couple of the group have done one of these before and said it worked really well. Point is, there is never actually a physical BF 'group' other than your own; you pick your own ferry crossing dates and BF sort your accommodation around those.

Last couple of years I’ve biked through France to Portugal (making the most of the Tesco Eurotunnel deal). This year I’m thinking of biting the bullet and taking the ferry from Plymouth to Santander not just to save on fuel, hotels and mileage but also because of the 90 day rule. I leave May returning July and want to head to Greece in August/September with whatever’s left on the ‘visa’. |

Hi, yes the bike ( car decks) are out of bounds during the crossing. I assume you worry about the bikes stability, in my experience I have had no issues although the Bay of Biscay is well known for getting rough. I think Brittany are well prepared and know how to lash down the bikes. |

Personally I think the biggest concern is the likelihood that the ship won't actually sail... in 2020 the group I was riding in pitched up at Santander only to be told bikes weren't able to board because of a fault with the ramp, and the options were therefore either to come back in a week's time, or to ride back to the UK through France (personally I returned from Madrid by EasyJet, with my bike in a van as it had broken down beforehand!). And several of my co-riders had done the same trip a year earlier and that time the whole ferry had broken down - again necessitating a Long Ride Home.... not great. I stick an overnight bag in my topbox which has my day clothes etc. Remove the bag which makes room for the helmet and gloves. I slip my Zumo 390 satnav in my pocket as I might want to edit routes during the trip. There is free wifi on board (in public areas) so you can use Google maps etc. plus you might meet some other riders that give you some ideas for places to visit. Get up the stairs before the masses in cars get on board and clog the stair well, waiting for the lift. Another tip: don't rush to your cabin. Bikes are on first as they go into the lowest deck so the cleaners won't be finished, maybe until an hour after you board. Find yourself a quiet spot, have a coffee or beer and relax. Maybe go to the restaurant reception and book a table at a time to suit before the masses in their cars get on board. The food is usually pretty good and having the set menu with a bottle of wine is my first treat of the holiday and passes a couple of hours. You will be spending a lot less in Spain & Portugal on a similar meal but, you are on holiday so don't slum it in the cafeteria.
