Combine these with the North Pennines, Yorkshire, Forest of Bowland and Cumbria in England and you have a fabulous playground. In the Highlands you have more people on fewer roads. Thanks to the Romans and later the medieval drovers etc, the north of England and Scottish Borders have a lot more roads used to take rural produce to urban centres. Many of these are blissfully free of traffic as you can more easily avoid the touristy bits. Fortunately, the SWC300 in Dumfries & Galloway completely circumnavigates the best road through the Galloway Forest! We could have told you that lots of the infamous NC500 consists of goat tracks (just kidding, not quite that bad).

I've seen footage of rides in the Cairngorms and the forests of South West Scotland, I do fancy giving them a look as suggested as well as the borders regions. |

A handy reference for Scotland is 'The motorcyclist's guide to Scotland' by J G Fergusson published by Tarmap Press. In addition to routes it gives places to eat, stay and visit. Also some basic info e.g Midges, Ticks and Cleggs. £11.33 on google. |
