No not a SMIDY but a sickening moment:

After a slog of day riding from Monschau in Eifel to Karlsruhe (Two roads closed slap bang on my route throwing both me and my SatNav and about 10 contraflows and three significant tailbacks) I pulled up at the Ibis and booked in. After unloading I went to fill up with petrol at the Avia station around the corner before getting out of my bike gear - one less thing to do in the morning before heading down to Baden Baden and down the B500.

So I had a choice of pumps labelled Super E10, Super and Super Plus. Which to choose? For the moment, on long journeys, I am opting for 95 octane E5. (If someone tells me the difference between E5 and E10 is only maybe 2 miles per 18 litre tank I'll stop being fussy!) The Super said nothing about whether it was E5 or E10 but logically it was E5 and the pump was midway between the Super E10 and the Super Plus in a trio of three with a green background. So I brimmed the tank with 11 litres of the stuff.... Then I noticed the pump handle was deathly black unlike the green handles on the the Super E10 and the Super Plus either side. ......... Could I find anyone that spoke English to answer my panicked query as to whether I had put diesel in the 1250RS. Could I hell!!! 10 anxious minutes later I was satisfied that it was petrol that I had put in. It seemed odourless which is what confused me (Maybe I have got Covid in which case diesel in my tank is the least of my problems!!!!)

I have been reading online about confusion caused by E10 in the UK. I thought I had it suss'd but that was a scary moment.

Easy one. Just put some in a container and drop in a lighted match. If it goes out it's diesel, if it bursts into flames you are OK 'cos its petrol

Odorless is diesel in Europe?

In the US, Diesel has its own stench and the nozzle is larger in diameter....

Nope in Europe diesel and petrol have distinctive odours for me but not everyone has a sense of smell. E10 is fine.

I done that. And rode 2 miles to park up at the office. Couldn’t work out why it wouldn’t start when I wanted to go home. Finally sussed it. Bike recovered, emptied, flushed, new sparklers and all good to go again! But it was a bit of a moment!
