I heard this on the BBC R4 this morning - the EU is yet to ratify the AZ vaccine made in India. 5 million UK residents have had this vaccine and may have problems travelling to the EU & elsewhere.

Batch nos, from the original Telegraph article are: 4120Z001, 4120Z002, 4120Z003 - this article is behind a paywall but you can find a link in the ITV article. You can find the batch on the card given to you when jabbed or on your NHS record via the app.

Some EU countries are ignoring the EU advice and going with that given by the accreditation given by the WHO

Spain
Switzerland

Notably, countries with ferry routes from the UK apart from Spain are not on the list.

If you plan to travel by ferry to France, Belgium or the Netherlands then check if you will be allowed entry, even if just passing through.

the position is changing, with more countries taking the WHO ratification as "good enough" rather than waiting for the Indian and EU bureaucracies to grind into action.

https://reopen.europa.eu/en/ will give you information and links about EU states & other Schengen countries. Note, France has the UK as orange so you can't go there anyway without a reason that is on the "urgent" list.

Dave,

It is a complete nightmare trying to figure a way through at the moment.

Last year when we were part of the EU I was able to transit from one EU country to another. Netherlands (Rotterdam), Germany, Switzerland then Italy then back-tracking the same route.

As best I can see at the moment Netherlands would require me to isolate for 5 days before moving on to Germany who I think would allow me to transit but then I would have to quarantine for 7 days in Switzerland.

If I have read things correctly France does allow me to transit so I could then just quarantine for just 7 days in Switzerland. So cannot go there but can transit through there if my reading is correct.

It is 8.5 weeks before my planned travel. Goodness only knows what the position will be by then. I dip in to check just occasionally. There is no point in stressing about it!

Will do some more what if checking this weekend.

Postscript: Looks like I have got the transiting Germany bit wrong:

"According to Federal Interior Ministry guidance and the German Embassy in London, transit through Germany by land with a private vehicle is currently not possible because of the UK�s designation as a virus variant area of concern." Sigh!

So definitely 14 days quarantine atm if I go there (But Angela has made some encouraging noises about change today)

Nearly all European mainland countries are on the UK amber list at present. The arrangements each country requires from UKers visiting seem a bit academic at the moment.

I quarantined for 10 days last September and will happily (small exaggeration!) do so again if it allows me to ride around Europe and especially visit my son and grandchildren in Switzerland.

Better news this morning - Germany is lifting the 14 day quarantine for double vaccinated visitors from the UK. So I have a glimmer of hope for making Switzerland early September. Currently I still face 5 days quarantine in the Netherlands (and lateral flow and PCR tests to board the ferry and enter Holland) then 7 days quarantine in Switzerland once there and maybe facing the same rigmarole coming back. If I can just get rid of the 5 days quarantine on entering the EU - whether that be via France or the Netherlands - things become doable. My son, I am sure, will be fairly relaxed about Swiss quarantine.

And it begins to look likely that I can escape quarantine on my return to the UK.

Not quite time to begin my detailed planning yet but at least the clouds of depression surrounding the trip are slowly dispersing!
