My bike is at the dealer next week for an annual service.
They have offered me a loan bike, so today I set about obtaining the DVLA check number which in the UK authenticates your license details to a car or bike dealer so they can be assured you have no penalty points or disqualifications.
My initial attempts were unsuccessful so I had to verify my identity. It transpires that back in 2018 someone has managed to have my license transferred to another address (in London) and my license is now invalid.
After a lengthy wait I managed to get through to a human at the DVLA (licensing authority) who tells me to report the 'theft' to their fraud office with some proof of identity to attempt to get it returned.
Fortunately my entitlement to drive /ride still exists, they just think I have moved house.
Hopefully this can be resolved and no other attempts to steal other aspects of my life have been attempted.
It might be worthwhile for others to check that their details are correct before finding out the hard way, the DVLA's checks are obviously not so robust.

Oh. That's not good. Fortunately I have tested a few bikes so I can say mine is OK.

Possibly worth saying that my understanding is that BMW will give you a lone bike (or allow a test ride) if you have no more than 6 penalty points.

Just checked my licence. No problems except that as usual I mis-remembered my National Insurance number. Must store a copy of that on my phone (duly disguised). That way I can take a test ride on a whim if I wish. On second thoughts, in the interests of my bank balance, maybe I should not do that!

As far as test rides, local Oceanbmw made the news a few years back for a 'test rider'
I think he tested an s1000rr, filmed it, posted it on youtube and then had the 'boys in blue' pay a visit.

This may be the reason for full licence checks.

I am still no further forward.
The DVLA have introduced an email enquiry service to take some strain off the telephone system which is currently running at a 30min wait time.
It takes them a minimum of 4 days to respond. After 3 emails they now tell me to write in as this issue cannot be resolved by email or phone.
Trying to prove who you are, or more importantly who you are not is not as easy as you might think.
I wait a response to the written word......

though it was easy and quick for the DVLA to let someone hack your licence and put another address on it. If only they could be sued for their errors they may sort them out as fast as they let people abuse the system.

After 10 weeks of phone call/ email/ letter I have now received some correspondence from the DVLA verifying the fraudulent transfer of my license.
I now have to provide proof of ID to have it transferred back to me.
Hopefully I will have some good news soon.
All comes to those who wait......
