Ref the Puig hugger. I have one. I bought it for my first 1200 RS in 2016 and it’s now on my third, so will have covered about 35,000 miles. No problems with it and when I bought the 1250 from Bahnstormer in Maidenhead, they transferred it to the new bike for me.

I have just had my bike serviced by Bahnstormer in Alton. They advised me to take the hugger off. They have seen instances of the mounting bolts coming loose, getting bend and ruining the rear calliper, amongst other things. They added some locktite and torque’d it back up.

After 35,000 miles on 3 different bikes (one written off) I’ll probably stick with it as I like how it looks, (still gets filthy) but it is clear they can sometimes cause problems.

Thanks for sharing your story and the endorsement. Sounds like it's the hugger has been good for you.

You mention it still getting filthy under there, so is it safe to assume you're not using a MudSling or similar?

I'm trying to figure out if the Mudsling + Hugger = Better than one or the other, or if they somehow interfere with one another (physically), or if it's analogous to "a belt and suspenders" and just a dumb idea.

I have both the Puig hugger and MachineArt mudsling on my R1200RS. They do not interfere with each other. The best protection by far is offered by the Mudsling.

I installed the Mudsling to protect the shock. When riding in the rain the shock can get peppered with sand. Mudsling does a great job of preventing the shock shaft from getting sand blasted.
The Mud Guard and Mudsling does a good job of keeping the bike clean after a few miles of wet road.
After 5 or 10 miles of rain you can have the Mudsling, Hugger, Mud Guard and the back of the bike will still be a mess

Thanks for filling me in on how the combo at least isn't incompatible from a fit standpoint; don't know where/how I got that idea. Your comment about the Mudsling doing the heavy lifting is starting to become a familiar refrain. So, maybe some incremental protection. Gotta noodle it.

Absolutely right, Lee. A rainstorm is a rainstorm. And I'm not opposed to washing crud off of a bike, but the "ounce of prevention" idea seems to come into play in a big way with the MudSling. I'll noodle the Hugger for a bit. Seems more and more like a "nice to have," but I'm a sucker for that kind of farkling. It has to stop somewhere, doesn't it?

I have the Mudsling and the Puig hugger fitted together, I haven’t had any issues with the hugger, its a solid as it was 3 years back, so likely the issue was a poor batch or early design fault. Oh and I also have the Aus/NZ mudguard and still the back end gets filthy!

Sorry to keep picking at a year-old thread, but I'm contemplating adding the Puig Hugger to my new RS, which already has the Mudsling installed. Is it true that the two play well together? It seems I read somewhere that they somehow interfered with one another, requiring some trimming of one piece or the other where they meet up under the seat? Not opposed to a little creative Dremel work, but don't want to have to engineer some crazy fit issue.

What was your experience, if you recall? Thanks in advance!

The leg protection is better with the hugger, but there still lots of room for improvement. The GS mud guard has given the best results.

Thank you both for the feedback, I'll try the hugger first (subjective aesthetical/functional compromise) - with autumn and firm damp commutes with messy work slacks I'll see about the GS sourced extra protection
@Mark I know an excellent local shop/painter who could do wonders with basic black hugger - white would probably look amazing but be more susceptible to muck and fling... but there's always red to match the frame :)
