It is 2021 in the 'Bike' magazine world and the February issue is now available.
Mixed reviews on the R18 cruiser and the latest GS, along with an article on noisy exhausts which has prompted some police authorities to look closely at aftermarket pipes.
Sadly, I also read that the National Motorcycle Museum is having to sell off stock to stay afloat.

I eagerly await the March issue which will hopefully tell of a global cure of the virus and a return to normality for all.

I had given the bike press a miss for some time as I got fed up with the endlessly rehashed material and "news" that is months out of date in this interconnected world.

For the last 2 months I had a free Readly* subscription as I spotted a promo on the MSE website. Sadly, the magazines seem much the same and I don't take long to whizz through, reading the small number of articles of interest. I went to cancel the subscription before the charges kicked in but I seem to have acquired another free month as someone used my referral link when I spammed it here and on UKGSer, so thanks for that.

* Readly is a bit like Spotify or iTunes for magazines. It works on a laptop, phone and a tablet. Normally £7.99 a month but get a free month by clicking my link so make your own mind up if the service is worth the fee. It's a cheap subscription if you have family or friends to share with as you can have several user profiles on the same account.

It must be difficult for any publication to fill its pages these days. I have been taking Bike for a long time now and enjoy some issues more than others.
I find reading from a screen tiring after a while and care must be taken in the bathtub.

Don�t read publications any more, they seem biased towards selling more adds.

Yes, the budgets are nowhere what they used to be so they have less time to compile the stories and the fees paid to the contributors is low. This results in a lot of recycling of material especially between the Bauer titles, Bike & Ride.

An acquaintance used to write quite a bit of stuff for bike magazines but has moved into a very different, more lucrative sector of journalism. He still writes a regular column in MCN, the used bike bit, but that is a hobby for beer money.
