I'd say it was definitely the 21st century when I experienced the IAM; in assessed rides, riding with a buddy who was IAM instructor, reviewing one of his debrief videos and IAM group rides. It's good that it's changed, it needed too. But I also hear the advanced and masters situation is not good for learning, |

The IAM don't have 'Instructors' and as an Ex National Observer (I can't be an examiner AND and an Observer) and a Master's Mentor I pride myself in being 'good for learning'. I had a Master's mentee who sadly wasn't up to making any of the changes needed to ride at a Masters standard and he wasn't best pleased with the process. He wanted me to agree with him that his riding standard was good enough to gain a distinction at Masters level and in reality his riding standard was barely a pass at advanced level. Maybe bite the bullet and give it a go? We have to be open to constructive criticism if we are going to learn and improve. I'm assessed regularly and I'm leaning all the time. I try to be very open and honest both with others and myself. The only issues I've had with people is those that can't accept any constructive comment or criticism on their riding and that has been 2 people amongst about 30 observed associates, 60 advanced tests and 4 Masters mentees. I usually get much thanks from the work and effort I put into helping people along their journey. |

I am negative towards the IAM but it's from my experience of having had assessed rides which over emphasised extreme road positions, having been on IAM ride outs and watched them practice hard left gutter riding without any real benefit (especially in a group where ones optimal road position changes massively) and some highly suspect overtakes, riding with a good friend who was an IAM observer and observer trainer and assessor. It's not just IAM which has/had dogma, I see it in the HRT courses at Cadwell, they are highly critical of covering the front brake, failing to acknowledge people who practice it and people who have bikes with lean angle sensitive ABS. But I'm please it works so well for you, if I do anything further in the future I will try ROSPA. |

The IAM is in the earnest process of weeding out the dead wood. I've long been an advocate of 'Twist of the wrist' and I'm a Bikesafe Assessor too. I'm also aligned with HRT. You may wish to look at 'The Upper Half of the Motorcycle'. |

I went out for an epic ride yesterday with a couple of friends, one on a grey SE RS like mine and one GS mounted. Kendal, Shap, Orton, back road to Kirkby Stephen, Brough, Midleton in Teesdale, Barnard Castle, Tann Hill Inn (after 6 miles of some really gnarly back lanes strewn with cow shit that turned out to be a dead end) via the A66. Torrential rain and glorious sunshine. After setting off from the Inn (The highest in England) I noticed my plugged tyre had dropped to 36 psi having been spot on 41.8 for the ride previously. Down to Keld and Kirky Stephen it stayed constant but by the time I got to Tebay it was a dropping quickly. I tried another plug and it held all the way home, sealing when moving and weeping slowly when stationary. |
