USA West » It is a hot time in the SF Bay Area

Almost all of the San Francisco Bay Area is impacted by severe fires right now. So definitely not a good time to visit. I live on the coast, south of San Francisco and things are getting nasty in the Santa Cruz Mountains and down to the coast, south of me.

Right now the fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains are totaling 75 square miles and as of this morning and there is still no containment. The towns of La Honda, Boulder Creek, Felton, Ben Lomond, Bonny Dune and Davenport have been evacuated and Pescadero is next on the list. And now Scotts Valley, located a few miles east of Santa Cruz, is being evacuated, where Zero motorcycles are built. Also being evacuated are parts of Half Moon Bay and Sky Londa, where Alice's Restaurant is located, although the restaurant was still open as of last night. I bet they will save the restaurant as a brand new fire station was built next to the restaurant and they sure won't want to loose that as it was just finished after two years of construction at a cost of millions of dollars. I also hope that the fire doesn't reach the hydrogen refueling station located across the street. That could be really bad as it seems to be packed to the gills with plenty of compressed hydrogen gas. All of the buildings and most of the campgrounds in Big Basin have also been destroyed by the fire, including the HQ building, along with the general store and museum complex across the street. It was also reported last night that UC Santa Cruz is being evacuated, which my youngest granddaughter is attending, at the moment virtually.

The only positive news this morning is that the fog is in along the coast and temperatures are expected to be cooler today. Unfortunately, the wind is expected to pick up this afternoon. A very sad situation and it is worse in other areas of Northern California north and east of here.

Oddly, this morning the weather at my home located 3 miles from the coast, is 58 degrees F, very foggy with moderate drizzle.

Im originally from San Jose. Gettin pics.... scary one just east of there. Remaining family lives down south. From Arroyo Grande, up towards SLO and Atascadero. Same deal there.

My daughter had fires very close to her home in Australia a couple of years ago.
At one point they were told not to leave the house and helicopters overhead would drench the house if necessary.
Very scary stuff.

Here are some photos that I took this morning when I and some friends had breakfast at Alice's Restaurant, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, south of San Francisco. On the way home while riding on I-280, the smoke was so thick that you could only see about 1/4 mile and my eyes burned until I was able to get away from the worst of it.

Hi Richard, I live in Woodside (20 miles south of SF) and very close to fire. We are about halfway between Alices and 280 and fortunately or unfortunately surrounded by oaks and Redwoods. The EZU fire appears to be in control on north border but still threatening many homes, if it jumps Skyline we could be impacted. We had incredible lightning that started all the fires and forecast is for potential dry thunder this evening. With all the fires the crews are all thin. What a strange year.

The weather in the San Francisco Bay Area is really weird today. We are completely covered by a thick layer of smoke that is making it so dark that street lights have remained on and I need to turn on the lights in my home just to get around. Two days ago it was 98 degrees here, now it is dark and 60 degrees F. I took the attached photos in front of my home at 1:30pm today.
