Just enjoyed a first tide on my R100RS having taxed and insured her for the next 6 months. She turns 40 next January so no road tax or MOT from next year. I’ve owned her since 1985, still enjoy the looks and the riding style, although I need the seat pad give me a bit more “ height” and take the strain of a stiff hip.

That is a beautiful bike! I'm going to guess lots of folks stop to talk to you about it every time you take it out.

Thanks Dave, yes it generates far more interest than its younger 1200RS sister, good thing they are never out together!

Great bike I had mine in 1985 it was a 1983 finished in dark red and smoke black. I toured France and UK and what a practical bike it was for that purpose 2 up with side cases and a tent on the back rack. I eventually sold it to go back to sports bikes in 1987 with a baby in the house and not practical for the wife to ride up back.

The new bikes spoil us with the poise and control and how I remember the forks walking beneath me under heavy braking while trying to stop for a French copper who walked in to middle of road with one hand raised and the other on his gun to only have to let be go with nothing more than ear bashing as no paper work available for nabbing us brits. The way the bike lifts the rear on acceleration and rocks from side to side all forming part of the character.

BMW could still learn from this bike in the way the side cases tuck in and are no wider than the handle bars so filtering no problem and you cold stuff loads in.

A thing of great beauty (I had an 81 new) and far more 'ahead of it's time' than the R1200/1250RS is today in my opinion.

I had a young biker in Exeter tell me give it was gutless as it only had 100cc.

Ady, I made similar 2-up tours with my girlfriend ( now my wife of 25 yrs) back in the mid-80’s. Your memory of the character of this bike is correct, nicely tucked in panniers, tent in a roll bag on the small rear carrier. Yes the forks are challenged under heavy braking and the shaft drive does act exactly as you describe. I’m so glad to have held onto this bike for 35 years , having spent quite some years working and living in East Asia I managed to find a suitable “ home” for it on 3 occasions where it was stored and ridden by equal enthusiasts.

Peter, I quite agree that whilst the engine was perhaps not as powerful as the latest Japanese multi’s of the late 70’s / early 80’s the ability to handle luggage, the superb fairing, and standard ( inclusive) accessories such as a good tool roll, bike pump, cable lock and first aid kit were impressive. I still have all those bits and bobs on the bike and there is still spare space under the seat!

My wife says the R100 is a better pillion ride than the R1200, she prefers the ergonomics of the seat and footpegs.
I rode this bike for the first time in many months this week, the relative lack of power had me thinking the clutch must be slipping until I checked the (proper) Rev counter, it was very steady, goes to show how we get conditioned to the power of modern bikes.
Still for looks it’s the old-girl for me every time, I would say the same about my wife, but she wouldn’t believe me

Lovely bike. Ive admired your pictures of it on other posts and think its great that you've had it for so long. It's truly 'your' bike.

I had an R65RS for six or seven years (I know BMW didn't produce a 650 RS, but it had the fairing fitted at the dealer - Robinsons Of Rochdale - from new). I did really enjoy that charming bike (my brother still has it), but blimey you think your 100 is underpowered

Plastic air box cover and lighter clutch than my old man’s R80/7 that I used to borrow back then. I am most envious!

Beautiful, I nearly bought one in the mid nineties but didn't, one of those that got away.

I hope you continue to ride it for many years to come.
