Hi v8guy. After 60 ish bikes I bought a VFR Crossrunner which was to be my last bike before putting my crash helmet into retirement . I had it 3 months and , unlike you , hated , loathed , detested it with a vengeance . I did not like , I could not live with it. You can't please all of the people all of the time. Traded it in for an RS and love it . It's not perfect and may not be for you , but give it a chance . We all have different expectations . I firmly believe that you need to live with a bike for a while before you know if it's a keeper. |

I've also been wondering about the longevity of the shock and forks. Given that it's an ESA setup, the rider is kinda tied in to running compatible shocks. Seems that other than OEM, there's a Wilbers option but not much else. How serviceable is the OEM unit? I'm kinda used to relatively crappy Japanese bike shocks which are often not even rebuildable, but at least are easily replaced with far better equipment. With ESA, this is less of an option. I discovered some references to MCT and Firefox who rebuild ESA shocks, but I'm not certain if these are RS shocks.. all the forum chatter I found related to slightly older GS bikes. Anyone had their RS shock serviced and/or rebuilt? I also wonder whether the usual rules of suspension customisation apply to the ESA setup.. change of spring weight / oil weight, re-valving.. I've had all of those done on various bikes in the past, and have always found the transformation worthwhile. Not that I feel it needs it - stock suspension seems brilliant so far -, but I barely know it yet... |

BMW's extended warranty covers the suspension up to 30,000 miles (in UK). Few RS bikes will be at that mileage and even fewer will have had failed shocks. |

What I'm more concerned about is the long term - previous experience shows that if I gel with a bike, I keep it for a decade.. likely way beyond 30k or any reasonable warranty period, and therefore beyond the reasonable lifespan of a given shock absorber. How ever if you are obsessed with tuning up for the perfect set up for one type of road and riding style, you will have to upgrade to Wilbers or Ohlnes and take the time and miles to get them set up to you desires. I did put a Wilbers on my previous GS..took me to 2 months to get the settings right (rebound dampening setting was the biggest benefit) and in my opinion superior. Not cheap though. I have 35k miles on my RS and there are others on this blog who have upward of 80 or 90K miles. I can not detect wear effects, but I have not ridden a new R1250RS back to back with my 1200RS. |

Took a third test ride today, and gave it a thorough inspection... all good. Price agreed and deposit paid. It'll be a couple of weeks before I collect because life gets in the way, but hey ho.. no hurry!
