I'm interested in checking my own valves for the first time. I've checked valves before (on other bikes) but never a BMW. Others have told me that the GS motor is identical, so my question is ...

Does this video of a '16 GS Adventure directly mirror/apply to my RS?

Present: 2016 BMW R1200RS, 2016 Triumph Street Triple R, 1988 Honda NT650 Hawk GT, 2008 Genuine Buddy 125

Robin. The video is fine. He goes fast but the info is there. Hopefully you won�t have to spend time taking of all that extra junk 😵. When assembling be very careful to not over torque the valve cover bolts. There are plenty of other vids online that you could also have a look at. Have fun.

I have a DVD that shows maintenance videos for a 2017 GS.
The valve check on the GS video is the same procedure for my 2016 RS.

I did already two valve inspection without adjustments. A torque wrench is required.

A tip: the manual suggests to use new gaskets for the valve covers. Even if this should be right procedure, I suggest to use the old ones and use a black silicon gasket.

I have checked both of ours 2 times and reused the rubber gaskets.
When we had Brick K bikes I would reuse the valve cover gaskets.
I would replace them after they had some age on them, maybe 6 or 7 years.

I agree with Lee on this. Recommend cleaning the gaskets with solvent so there is no oil residue. Same for the mating surfaces on the head. Be very careful of the round spark plug gasket that is stays in place as you mate up the cover to the head. You should never have to replace these gaskets if you're careful.
