I use to keep a small tail bag on my rs. Typically I use it to bring with me some tools (repair kit, medicines, etc.)

I'm wondering if there is a different solution to bring with me some tools.

Do you have some suggestion for a tools bag?

I have been using a Touratech pannier topper bag from my GSA to carry my tire pump, tools, tire gauge, etc. It expands to twice its size (shown in compressed) so can add a jacket, shoes, etc. I secure it to the rear seat with a velcro strap going under the seat so need to remove the seat to put on or take off. It is not water proof so I place items in a water proof pouch of choice including a plastic grocery bag.

I think it's a shame that BMW didn't design in a couple of covered cubby holes into the fairing panels (ie in the flat black sections on either side). There's a fair bit of redundant space below them - a missed opportunity

For day trips, I'm with you, and just use the tail bag with a couple small tools, a tire plugger, and bits. (In fact, if I recall, I found a Held tail bag after seeing a photo of one on your bike.)

I have also loaded some 45 g CO2 cartridges into the left seat trim and a tire plugger into the right seat trim, so even without the tail bag, I won't be caught without ability to repair a simple tire puncture. You remove the seat panel, and then remove the backside of the panel to utilize this space.

(Have to say - when travelling, I pretty much give up the right pannier to emergency stuff.)

4 hrs later, lots of valuable riding time lost

On my first tour to Europe I even carried a bottle of oil, but as the bike doesn’t use a drop I stopped that.

However, recent tours have included an old shoebox of tools, puncture repair kit, pump, etc, etc.

But I’m looking to challenge myself this year and cut it down to minimum of puncture repair, pump, fuses, cable ties and tank tape

As suggested above, roadside repairs will be limited and I haven’t had to remove a wheel yet.

I don’t go off-road, don’t need a jerrycan of fuel and don’t even blow bulbs.

I reckon just enough tools to tighten anything that has shaken loose, the aforementioned fuses will keep me going.

My basis for tools to carry is that I want to be able to remove the wheels. I have flat repair stuff on board, but if the tire is torn up I want to be able to take the wheel to a shop rather than the whole bike. Other than this just stuff to remove fairing parts etc. And, yes, and air compressor.
