You are right about the difficulty of finding this site on Google.

As I’m changing tyres I decided to test my tyre plugging kit. And skill

1. Drill 1/8” hole in tyre. Hiss.
2. Ream hole with rough tool.
3. Load mushroom plug into fancy cylindrical tool.
4. Using pointy tool inside hollow cap, push special hollow cap into hole in tyre. Push Very Hard.
5. Screw loading cylinder into special cap that is now stuck into tyre, then screw down piston with hex tool to force mushroom into tyre.
6. Discover the hard way that when hex tool gets tight the mushroom has NOT inserted into tyre. GRRR
7. Repeat step 6 by turning the hex tool with a bit more strength. Don’t know the Torques, but it was bloody hard.
8. Tentatively pull the whole tool out of the tyre and rejoice when you see the tail of the mushroom sticking out.
9. Give tail of mushroom a good tug and cut off the excess without slashing fingers.
10. Connect baby compressor to it’s custom power lead under seat and switch on.
11. Time how long it takes to inflate tyre without blowing a fuse or seeing the compressor explode. 46psi in 10 minutes - in 3 stages.

Then I blew the tyre up to 55 with my big boy compressor and look forward to seeing how much air is there in the morning (before it goes for a tyre swap)

For those that have used the gooey cords, do you really need the Tee handle tools or do the "screw driver style" tools work fine? I understand the Tee handles will be easier use, but the other style is more compact.

........ today I got my new tyres fitted and got to see inside the old tyre that I plugged. It did hold 55 psi air all night and the mushroom inside looks like this

If the tire still had usable tread, an internal patch with that plug would have been a 100% repair in my book.

I don't think you could do a patch with a stop and go mushroom type of plug. You'd want to use a string type that doesn't have a 'head' on it.

I see no head in Boxerboy55's picture. If there was one, you would trim it flush........just like patching a cord plug.

I’m not familiar with the “string” mentioned above.

To be clear - the mushroom is cleverly inserted fat end first. This pops open and a good pull on the tail from outside snugs the mushroom head onto the inside tyre wall, where internal pressure then maintains a good seal.

The only trimming occurs externally should you wish to shorten the projecting tail, but it could be left to wear away quickly IMO.

Definitely no other “patches” involved.

Sorry for the ramble, which will be unnecessary for those who have more experience of plugging tyres than me, but a novice may become confused by the assorted terminology and types of plugging kits on the market.

I’m certainly happy with my Plug & Go.

The sad thing was that my 2017 rear puncture in the centre of the tread was such a gash that a roadside repair was impossible, so it became a van ride home.

I've been using stop-n-go plugger for years.

Never had a single issue. Perhaps it's because I don't ride very aggressively. <giggling>

Plug it. Ride more, worry less.

Would I really worry about...….not likely. According to various plug repair vendors, the interior patch prevents moisture from reaching and corroding any metallic belts/cords in the tire. If the tire very close to new, I would consider doing it.

BTW - this was the same repair we did on car tires in the late 1970's. The plug was the emergency repair. Adding the interior patch was considered equivalent to new. Lots of repairs never went beyond the plug.
