Thanks for reporting back on the new tyres. The fact that a self confessed ‘non expert’ can feel a difference between two sets of new tyres is telling in itself. Years (and years) ago I sought out Metzlers for my CB650Z but I never liked the Z8 on the RS finding them wooden and uncommunicative every time I tried them, although many on here like them. My first two RS came with Michelin’s. My 1250 had Z8s on when it was in the showroom, but Michelin R5 by the time I picked it up. |

I am on Z8s and new to the RS. Normally I "make good progress" when riding using engine braking and playing tunes on the gearbox. However occasionally I need to brake heavily approaching a corner (usually when I become aware it is tighter than expected). I have noticed some squirreling of the rear wheel under such heavy breaking when riding one up and lightly loaded - Nothing life threatening - I am just aware that the adhesion level at the rear wheel is compromised evidenced by the slight sideways movement at the rear under braking but things are fine once off the front brake. Maybe I need to be heavier on the foot pedal or reduce the rear tyre pressure (I was on 43 psi when I noticed it. I now run slightly under 42 unless carrying luggage). I think I was riding in Dynamic Mode on both occasions this has happened. 19 Plate R1250RS Exclusive with "bells & whistles" & full colour matched luggage |

I do not find such a problem on my 1200 but then I weigh 100kg and often ride with a topbox fitted. Try applying the rear brake a fraction of a second before you hit the front hard. The linked brakes will do this to an extent but loading the rear tyre really helps to reduce fork dive and squirming ont he brakes. I learn't this on a Honda Dominator and then used to good effect on a Yamaha TDM 850. |

Properly distribute the load, then longer wheelbase will result in more load on the rear wheel and more effective rear-wheel braking. For this reason, a lot of Harley's have braking distances which are similar to a much sportier bike.

I am not talking about emergency braking but rather squeezing appreciably harder when you appreciate that the bend ahead is not straight forward. The first time it happened I was riding spiritedly through a flickable open flat S bend with good visibility beyond - the sort where you can just stray onto the wrong side of the road rather than scrub off speed but a car came onto view coming the opposite way so I needed to stay well inside my own half of the road. Hence braking harder to keep good control on my own side of the road. I have since reduced the tyre pressure slightly on the rear when lightly loaded (I have a mains compressor so adjusting pressure when cold according to load is easy for me). My trip to Switzerland is still on. I shall know the bike much better after riding there with full luggage and then days out riding Alpine passes more lightly loaded. So looking forward to that!
