RE: protective clothing - 3

I am ATGATT, everything, all the time. In warm weather: no collar perforated leather jacket, Kevlar lined jeans with knee and hip pads, light colored leather gloves, perf boots, full face helmet. Sometimes I'll remove the back pad from the jacket in real hot weather. In cold weather: solid leather jacket, leather pants with knee and hip pads, gauntlet leather gloves, gore tex boots, full face helmet. I'll add an electric liner when really cold.

I live in Colorado now where the dry heat is easier to take. When I lived in SE Texas with 95 deg and 95% humidity, I used a mesh jacket and kevlar lined jeans w/o knee or hip pads.

Motorcycling is a hobby for me, 100%. No riding to work, no commute, no running errands.

Many moons ago, after a lowside on my '82 KZ1000. I vowed to always ride with, at least, an armored leather jacket. The First Gear non padded coat I wore then did save me from the road abrasions, but the impact managed to split the skin open, right at my elbow. About 12 stitches took care of it. Since then I've had Cool Tech, Joe Rocket and Dainese jackets. All with good armor.

Local/round town - textile or leather jacket, jeans (Levis or Hood bike jeans) bike boots (TCX or Alpinestar pit boots for summer) and leather gloves. Helmet (open face if on the Mz/BSA, flip front on the BM/Duc)

Further afield - textile suit (covers all weathers) or leathers for a short day ride (but find I'm using leathers less and less as they are just not as practical as textiles).

Rode around Brac island on holiday this year with Mrs GH on a 125 scooter - shorts, tee shirt and open face helmet. Minimal traffic, 35 deg C, 50kph max (150kg of us does not a fast 125cc scooter make...)

Early days - toured Europe in jeans, leather jacket and occasional Belstaff waxed cotton suit.

Its all about balancing risks.......

Does that statement also hold true for the little scooter I saw in your garage?

Summers in St. Louis.... I have to say, I'm not beyond jumping on the bike with sandals and shorts for a few miles of back street (30 mph) to work or the store. Hard to see the difference between that and the bicycle. Knock on wood, all my significant injuries to age 62 have been on the bicycle.

Reminded of the review of the RS from Greece that sports our host showing off the skinny back roads in the hills in shorts and tennis shoes.

If we are too harsh on our tolerance of those with less than ATGATT (AGAT), we're going to lose the natural progression of younger riders from electric assist bicycles to unresgistered 49 CC scooters, to motorcycles. Don't get me wrong, after close to 10,000 hours hanging around emergency rooms, I saw my share of stupidity and lack of preparation, but we want room for common sense.

These days ATGATT is my norm, biggest compromise is a very light mesh jacket and jeans with Kevlar on the warmest (UK) days for short rides. I’m shocked to see people in training shoes and without gloves, imagine permanently damaging your hands!
However back in the mid-80’s I recall touring a full beautiful day through the alps wearing leather trousers and jacket, it was such a hot day I decided to strap the jacket on the pillion seat and enjoyed the cooling breeze all day long, finishing the day in Evian on lake Geneva. I had to stay there camping for 3 days until the sunburn on my arms had calmed enough to allow me to wear a jacket - lesson learned, never again! That was on my R100RS - and she’s still a joy to ride.
