Here was a country of plenty, yet there was a sense of anger and disillusionment that was in stark contrast to the happiness of those people in Ireland who didn't have attics, garages and basements full of the accumulated junk of Americans...junk that made them happy for a short time after purchase, but quickly paled when its lack of substance became evident. |

They have set themselves up as a low tax economy and the are heavily reliant on overseas capital which can evaporate rapidly in a crisis. My former employer, Xerox, opened up a base there c1990 that contributed to my UK factory closing. Lots of corporate cash is bounced through Irish subsidiaries to take advantage of the low tax regime, much like Amazon does with Luxembourg for their EU profits. Ireland also has the other factors seen elsewhere. Internal migration to Dublin with a massively overheated property market and the rural economies struggling due to the exodus. They have the same illegal migrant problems as most countries in Europe, the same ageing demographic and low birth rate that will bite over the next few decades.

A lowering of the bar beyond any form of decency with the sole aim of scraping data and generating clicks to make profit. In polite circles one might call it platform decay but this term does not work as well. I have recently logged out of a popular motorcycle forum as the proprietor has let it become a cess pool of rage bait over politics, religion and his pet conspiracy theories. The platform is more sophisticated than this one as you can filter out individuals and threads but it is tiresome to have to do this. I just can't be arsed to wade through the detritus to find the occasional useful bit of information about touring or Moto Guzzi V85s. Spam goes here |
