The main point I have here with this subject is verify that the expensive parts being bought actually do improve performance, even just a touch. But it's all just fun really, and it's kind of the racing mentality, constantly looking for ways to improve the bike. As far as the RS not being sporty enough for performance fun, that is nonsense really. In capable hands the RS is quite fast as bikes go. Sure it is a little on the heavy side but with awesome tires it does just fine (road 6 GT's). What I'm saying is this bike can be fully sported so to speak. Back in the day, before phones and tons of traffic, we used to canyon bust a lot. On the old /5 I've passed jixers in the very tight and rough twisties. And believe me they were doing everything they could to keep me from from passing them. Sure in the straits they blow back by at warp 9 but I still keep up pretty well there too as they have to slow down some because it is a public road and there are LEO's out there. I can assure that I could in fact wax some folks with the modern RS if I was still inclined toward that sort of thing, which i'm not so much anymore ...

I think the last post missed my point. I ride my RS like a sportbike in the canyons, which is where almost all my riding takes place. Not to say there aren't stretches where I cruise...there are. But an incremental increase in power for the RS is wasted money - in my opinion only. I have no problem with others wanting a extra few horsepower, but the expense/benefit equation doesn't work for me. Additionally, I have owned 4 S1000RR's and am no stranger to performance, but it always puzzled me why owners would take their brand new RR and "flash" the ECU, after putting on a "full system" exhaust, then post on the RR board, "Why is my bike cutting out..." or something to that effect. And these are street riders...OK? So they take a bike that right out of the factory is a precision guided missile, try to eke out a little more (why?), then wonder "what went wrong?" |

Bearr I come from years of racing everything , tunning , improving even in the smallest bit. Not everyone can ride a 400 plus hp motorcycle. Yes I said 400hp.

OK...I get where you're coming from. You obviously know your motors and know what you want. For ordinary mortals like me, factory-built is sufficient. I do get the muffler thing though...my last RR lost the stock can immediately, replaced by an Akra GP shorty, and that DID make a difference. |

Just for grins, here's an example of what I was talking about earlier, regarding guys doing exhaust changes and ECU tuning...and this is just one of many examples. It seems a pandemic on sportbike boards. |

Another great thing about the boxer motor, which has plenty of power for most situations, is the fact that it is setup for longevity going many many miles. When you use an inline four, for track days especially, the life of the motor will be much less in almost all cases than the boxer. When they came out with the H2 I noticed in the specs the engine had a 25 hour track life. For a total rebuild. Sure you can get many more miles out of them in touring or what ever but why have that, when you can have a boxer, is my rational. And taking 650ib for an example, he gets rid of bikes after a short period it seems. He probably knows if you keep hot rodding them like those guys do, the motor will eventually fail if not rebuilt carefully fairly often. So, he just gets rid of them .... gives a lot of them away on his channel. And buy's new ones all the time ... he even had a GS the last time I seen, called it his old mans bike ... lol

But I'm just an arm chair guy in the strictest sense, no better off than the rest of us. Bmw and their boxer, as you know likely, have had a long running reputation for longevity. Back in the eighties I was gifted a R600/5. And this bike allowed me to ride all the time on very little money. All I had to do was buy tires and batteries, mainly. And I rode it a ton ..... After I got into the electrical trade and obviously had more money, I set up a deal and restomoded the 600 to a 900. Basically buying a top end off of a 74 900/6 of some sort. I bolted on the top end in one short afternoon and was riding it around. OMG it was a superbike now 50% increase in displacement .. lol. But I also noticed that I needed some other changes. The clutch spring was first, the 600s had a weaker spring, and the final drive was way to low. Traded that with a guy who had a 600 with the taller gearing, and he wanted to see fourth gear more often. And I had the whole top end rebuilt including new pistons. And the /5 spline at the final drive also was upgraded to the /6 which is about an inch wider. The bike now has about 130000 or more on it. Runs strong and not but about 50000 on that rebuild. I have to get a calculator out to figure out the mileage because I missed having the speedo gear changed to match the taller final drive. So it has been under reporting by 15% since the rebuild at 82500. The shop didn't want to do this work but I made them do it anyway. And they kind of ripped me off on the cylinders, but did a fantastic job rebuilding it, admitting the pistons were in fact no good on the top end they sold me. So with mostly highway miles and good service an old air head will make 100000 miles, but only in the best of conditions. It is better to have the bike ringed and the valves touched up as soon as it starts to use more oil, just like you would on a 62 cessna .. The newer stuff like our bikes have very durable ring material and cylinder coating that will last forever realistically as long as nothing gets into the motor. So you see and hear of folks getting 200000 miles out of them. And I theorize that the boxer motors haven't been lightened up as much internally as the inline four sport bikes are, helping with the longevity but not as brutally fast either ....

SCAR was written up in Suzuki Magazine with a record 265,000 miles on a Stock Gen 2 Hayabusa . Before he died a few years ago his bike had 325,000 miles .

And it sounds like the Busa is particularly durable (I've always kind of liked the Busa). You see some of those old BMW advertisement that have examples of people with more than 300000 miles on old air heads. But they all have been ringed and valved a few times or outright rebuilt several time but still, it is impressive. I think BMW developed some of the new materials for rings and cylinder coatings, back in the eighties. It seems likely many other manufactures have utilized this tech now. MY old 1978 XT 500s were also long lasting for sure. One of them I rode forever it seems, and was so completely worn out when I sold it. But it still ran like a top .... lol But still .... there's that 25 hours of track time for an H2. sometimes you do give up somethings to go really fast ....

Some good info here...thanks. So, let's see...if I get 200,000 miles on the boxer in my RS and given the number of miles I ride per year, that works out to me being about 109 years old when it hits 200K. I was planning to trade in when I turned 100 for the latest S1000RR (or variant thereof), but maybe I'll just keep it to see 200,000 on the ODO. |
