Harley Davidson stock up today, big. Why? They're getting a lifeboat from KKR and PIMCO. Sound familiar? It should...witness KTM.

While this is going on, sales are lousy. Harley's sales in the past quarter were down 27%.

HD dealers are not renewing franchises in the UK. I think we are down to 15 dealers now, half what it was a decade ago.

My closest one has reduced the floor space for HD and taken on the Piaggio brands (Vespa, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia & Gilera) as they offer bikes and scooters people want to buy.

Blade, a regional group where I used to live have gone from 2 HD branches to 1. They still have 2x Honda, 2x Triumph and a Ducati dealerships as those brands are also making bikes that sell.

It wasn't a bail out, they sold the future profits from their financial services unit. In the last quarter, H-D made more money from loan interest than selling motorcycles. They appear to have a production cost problem that can't be out run with higher priced models.

I recently read in the business section of my newspaper that H-D had bought themselves a new CEO. If I recall correctly he was sourced from the fast food industry. I guess that means that the H-D factory cafeteria will be serving burgers and fries from now on.
