4th of July celebration in a small California town

There was a 4th of July celebration all around my subdivision (surrounded by very dry vegetation, I might add), with huge fireworks and explosions being set off for a couple of hours last night. Even though these are illegal to set off in town and people caught doing so could receive a $1000 fine, there was not a cop or fire engine in sight. Just rockets and bombs going off every few minutes. I tried to take photos with my digital camera, but they didn't come out very well. However, I did find a photo in a news article that shows exactly the kind of fireworks that were being set off at the bottom of my short block. Fortunately, no fires were started by the fireworks so the subdivision homes are still around. I do wonder why the politicians and government regulators get all upset and pass laws making it illegal to purchase and then set off commercial-grade fireworks (only "safe and sane" fireworks are permitted) when they have no intention to enforce the laws?

yes, i was on fire watch last night too ...... fortunately it's still fairly green here but it is a concern ....

In Fairfield, CA, when they had their Independence Day parade yesterday, the last guy in the parade was a fellow pushing a cart and picking up road apples left by the horses ahead of him. Also in the parade were the Daughters of the American Republic (DAR), an electric garbage truck and of course, a couple of horse riders, in addition to the solitary cleanup crew.
