RE: Longest Day in the saddle on a RS ? - 2

Interstates in the USA have some beautiful scenery once out of the cities . Interstate 5 in California , Oregon , and Washington has some amazing sites , rolling , and long sweeping turns .
Some Of us LD riders also do Iron butt runs in Mountains / back roads and it usually a saddle sore 1000 run . I've done over 600 miles in the Ozark mountains in a day . Pig trail , push mountain 341 , 14 , 9 the list is out there .

We also ride old highways that are now repurposed with low traffic . When you only have 5 or 6 days to get away and ride good roads like Angles Crest National forest , and the LA canyons
one Rides straight on through making time by not messing around in gas stations , and hotels .

When I visit my sister in northern Vermont, it's a 490-mile day thru the Finger Lakes and Adirondack regions of NY state. Leave at 5A and arrive before 5P with breaks every 200 miles.

By the time we got our RSs in 2016 we were keeping our mileage under 500 miles.
When we had the k1300Ss we would do 600 to 700 to get out to the Rockies.
I did two days over 900 miles on a K75T when my Mom asked me to sit with her while my father was in the hospital in New Hampshire.

As the title says "Longest Day in the saddle" and for me and I suspect many others, it is the time rather than any distance. I am not a fast rider and keeping a steady progress over a day is usually my aim. Using main roads to get to my planned booking I can ride 450 miles a day in 12hours where with ferries and delays across Norway a good day could be only 200miles.
A good day out in uk, Poole bike nights, visit to Lynton and Lynemouth coast, even Newquay for a long day out, 14 hours but only 200 miles.

I wholeheartedly agree, Wessie.

I'm touring Spain and Portugal from late May, ferry to Bilbao, most days 200 miles or so. Perfect.

I'd love to know how you're finding the Guzzi.

I have done two days where I rode over 500 miles in a day. Neither were particularly pleasant on congested European roads. I think distances are a different matter in the rural parts of USA, as evidenced by a friend from California, staying with me, who thought an hour's drive across rural Wales to go to a pub restaurant he was aware of was a mere trifle. He was an Iron Butt type. He could not be persuaded that a trip to a Michelin starred restaurant 3 miles away would be a better idea.

The first trip was on the way home from Lake Garda and I decided to do it with just one overnight stop, including riding over the Petit St Bernard pass in the Alps. We got to just north of Lake Annecy on day one. I then had to ride 670 miles home, including a ferry across the English Channel. This was 2003 on a R1150GS when I was 40 years.
I have also ridden close to 600 miles home from Germany on the RS in 2017. Hateful journey as you had to ride through the densest conurbations in Germany and Belgium then go through the Tunnel where you hit Greater London.

Both were part of very pleasant trips overall, but not something I will entertain now. The 262 miles from home to Plymouth to catch the ferry will be the longest day on my forthcoming trip to Spain. Longest as in distance and tedium. For the rest of the trip I will keep the daily mileage down to under 250, often less so I can enjoy the scenery and a mid ride siesta like a local.

Got a few items coming to tweak the RS to eat more miles . While I chose the option 719 leavers / adjustable foot controls on ordering they are good but The Wunderlich adjustable foot pegs teamed with the eccentric shift / brake levers might be the ticket to get rid of that right knee pain . ( my right leg is 1.5" longer than the left leg )
Also a MRA Variotouring screen VTM smoke gray not to hide the wind but dull down some of the wind noise . SW motech tank bag as the wunderlich unit marks the body panels

My back is starting to tell me to ride less and sight see more. Either that or go to the gym more often.

A relatively pathetic 383 miles for me, returning home from a Spanish trip we did Javea to Soria avoiding all autoroutes & sticking to twisty back roads as much as possible. It was 10+ hours (including stops) & I was very happy to get off it at the end.
The other reasonably long day was around 360 miles from Boston (Lincs not MA!) to Cadwell Park, 180+ miles on track & then home to Essex. Not mega miles, but 130odd miles home after a big track session was knackering!
