If you’ve followed me for a while, then you know, I don’t back down easily and don’t shy away from a little risk. But the risk of being detained and deported could mean a decade long ban on entering the US, and having “Deported from USA” in my passport could jeopardize visa applications for other countries too.
On top of that, so much work, effort and money goes into planning a booktour that having to cancel it one day prior because I’m detained at the border is just not an option.
I was looking forward to meeting so many of you in the US and I’m gutted it’s not going to happen now 🥺

Respectfully disagree. I’d have to review all of her content, but the USA loves visitors. Only if she has anti-American content should she be worried, and even then, I’m sure there is a way to be “pre-approved” so there’s no issue upon arrival. The people being kicked out have no right to be here and are using the time to advocate against the USA. No other country will tolerate that. Americans are advised when traveling abroad that no other country has “freedom of speech” as the USA has…so watch what you say publicly.

She is more at risk from visiting an ill-advised city in the USA than having issues with immigration and customs. Keep in mind Americans can’t enter Canada if they have a DUI conviction in their past. The information as to if you have an issue visiting a country is available if you seek it out.

I think she should have made a simpler statement without the hyperbolic comments about her output contravening the vaguely defined parameters set by your government that seem to go against this freedom of speech you mention.

Due to her travels in the Middle East, she is not eligible for the visa waiver ESTA used by most visitors to the US. This is the pre-approval thing you mention. There is no guarantee that the US would honour her existing visa for her to enter based on her travel history. Policy seems to change daily on such matters with a capricious administration. It is difficult to commit to expenditure on a promotional tour with such uncertainty. This should have been the main element of her statement.

Of course, her statement could be construed by a cynic to be part of her self promotion. Allude to some contentious content in the book so that more people buy it. I bet Mr Bezos will still stock it. Kerching.

Go up to Blacksburg and tell that line to the international students (7) and alumni (2) that had their VISAs revoked. At Penn State, Visas have been revoked minor DUIs and possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Oh, and the guy sitting in El Salvador prison.....he was in the US Asylum program for protection from the El Salvadorian gangs. His crime, wearing a Chicago Bulls hat and hoodie.....

My thought is that when the border cops took one look at Noraly's passport as she got off of the plane, they would not be happy seeing all of the different countries that she has visited in rapid succession over the past few years, which would land her in an airport detention center in short order and get her immediately kicked out of the country. I think she is right in not pushing the issue and just promoting her book on-line.

Perhaps, but I would like to think that, unlike our useless TSA, the customs people are more intelligent and IF concerned would quickly confirm her "celebrity status" and know she's not a security risk.

Let's face it, when I went to Europe, I had any number of paranoid thoughts that I'd be turned away because you can never know what's in "your file" that these people access when scanning your passport.

Last week I was supposed to make a work visit to Austin, TX. I declined the invitation and its associated networking opportunities on the same basis as Itchy Boots. My phone is full of US administration critical content - and with good reason.. there's an awful lot to criticise - and for me it was just not worth the risk. I already attract the unwelcome attention of a certain kind of individual being a long-haired, bearded, hippy looking type, and those kind of individuals are often attracted to positions where they can exercise power over others. Positions like, for example, border/immigration staff.

The fact is, people entering the USA have been barred for being critical of the administration, not for being "anti-american". I don't think it's in any way "anti-American" to be critical of a set of individuals, policies or ideas, any more than I feel anti-British for criticising my own government. It would be a mistake to conflate the two.

The peripheral issue ... any criticism of Israel can be judged antisemitic and lead to deportation or loss of access. So, any foreign student or visitor has to cleanse that content, if they have it.
